I would like to send a custom knife to a friend in Spain. It is a Japanese style Tanto. The blade is 2" long,4 1/2" oal.The handle is cordwrapped Rayskin with a Bootclip leather sheath.
Has any other maker had a problem shipping U.P.S. to Spain?

Don't think so. The most probable scenario it's that the package will not be opened in customs (unless you declare it's value). Even if it's opened (you declared a value or just out of luck), the guy you send it in Spain will have to pay the taxes and fees for the knife (pretty high, about 20% the value you declared and/or stated on his payment reciep) but that's all. The last time I payed for a package in the customs they asked me if it's a "knife" or "dagger" because the taxation is higher for daggers since they are weapons. I said it's a knife, of course :)

I shipped a knife to Spain a few years ago and declared it as a
pearl handled letter opener, and it went through fine.

One thing to know about knives is that they are "hand tools" which is a much more sheeple description.

Just my advice after many international deals.

You pay 60% of the total value (including shipping expenses) on all imported items here in Brazil, except books. If they decide to inspect the package, that is. What the government does with that money is anyone's guess, but it certainly does not benefit the average citizens.
Thank God I'm leaving...
