Have looked at both on line. I like the "indestructible" image of the Buck, but all knuts rave so about the Para. The only use it will ever see is either opening a bag of chips or in an absolute end of the world SHTF situation - not much in between. I welcome your opinions.

The Spydie has better steel, a better lock, and the Hole.

The Buck looks nice enough, but three strikes and it's out.

Two very different knives. Kind of hard to compare. Sounds like the Spyderco would suit your needs the best of the two though. The Buck is HUGE.

For most uses, from general utility to self-defense, I'd go with the Spyderco. For using a folder when you really should have a fixed blade, then the Buck Strider would be a good choice. The tanto tip is not sharp so if you want the knife more for cutting than prying (not something to do with a folder) get the drop point.

I agree. It's an "apple and oranges" comparison. I think the Paramillie is probably your better choice. Don't think you could go wrong.;)

Para military, if you want something that is indistructible then get a fixed blade to go with it.

IMO:

Buck - Brick with a sharp edge.
Para - Sharp knife.

depends on what you want.

Para-Military.

Buck Strider Tarani owned I remember the handle is bulkier. Tarani's material is similar to Para-Military. The Tarani I had. I don't like its handle, don't like its over all finish. Spyderco from packaging to single screw on thier knives are better in every way.

I played with Tarani for a week, personaly don't like it at all. Don't think it worth for $80-100 knife range. Sold it. Not sure 880 is the same or not. Tarani "suppose" to be a better version than 880.

Personal taste may apply. I was a spyderco hater become lover. From 5 spyderco knives that i own, i conclude. Can't go wrong with spyderco.

Unless going after custom Strider. I won't get Strider from Buck.

Buck/Strider 880
Heavy
Thick
Tough
Well-Built

Spyderco Para-Military
Light
Very Sharp
Great Ergos
Great Lock

In my opinion for...

...general use I'd go with the Para-Military.

...specialized use (i.e. Self Defense, Survival, etc.) either would do.

...specialized use (i.e. Prying, Chopping, etc.) I'd go with the 880.

The syderco has the "edge" when using gloves too IMO

I have both and use them regularly. I like using the spyderco more but I'm astonished at how well the Buck/Strider works with it's boxy design.

Ultimately I couldn't decide so I got both...and a sh!t load more :D

I actually do like the Buck Strider and have thought about buying it from time to time. But I gotta say....the paramilitary is brilliant.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the para be actually tougher, with its compression lock...at least, in that sense

you've heard the para praise, but what people aren't mentioning is that the para is really good at chopping also. Especially if you hammerfist the handle beneath the coil, giving you more leverage. It beat all my other conventional folders in a big way.

I'm betting if you hold the para, you'll feel "it."
