Hi. First time poster here, and looking for advice on making a knife with the main purpose of hunting pigs, the second, maybe some light chopping. The jury is still out on this, so Im not sure if I should carry a knife and ax, or just get a all-in-one knife.

First off, my criteras is, it has to have a double edge, and second, very sturdy, with a secure handstop. Dont want my hand to slip. Maybe having the guard like the Busse knives, intregral(sp).

So, what is the best shape for stabbing? Using my words here.
Leaf blade
Roman gladius style
Triangular shape
Spear type

Blade has to be between 10-12", 2-2,5" wide, but not sure about thickness, 1/4", 5/16"??

And what kind of blade material do you suggest?

And Im not sure about the handle design quite yet, but I have ideas about it. I do want to use micarta as a handle material.

Have you considered a Randall Model 12 "The Smithsonian Bowie" -- 11" blade, 2 1/4" wide, of 3/8" stock. (01 carbon tool steel) Top cutting edge sharpened. 5 1/4" (approximate) leather handle. Brass lugged hilt. Duralumin butt cap. A replica of the famous Bowie knife of a century ago, similar to type displayed in the Smithsonian and used in the motion picture The Iron Mistress. (Wt. 28-34 oz.) Should work well on Pigs :)

Here is mine :)

You have to go Bowie that big which is too heavy. If you want a pig sticker you'll have to go about 8 inch. The CS OSS is an excellent pig sticker and has a sub-hilt to pull it out. It is nice and light and razor sharp. It has a nice price and if you want to go more the CS Black Bear is better steel but heavier.

My nephew is a county hog trapper in Citrus County and hunts hogs with a knife in his freetime. He designed this one which I made for him.The spec's are 9.5" blade,1.25" wide,.187" thick O-1 .He has killed quite a few with this one. He and I both feel a narrower blade is better. Good luck with your hunt.Dave

Here is one by Greg Lightfoot.

And what he got with that bad boy.

Greg makes great knives, very happy with my purchase from him.
He actually took that boar with the Zambezi, one of his production knife designs...

but I imagine that the Hog Hunter does at least the same job and has the double edge that you're looking for (plus it looks wicked).

Feel free to give me a call in the shop tomorrow. Would love to talk pig knives with you.

Will you be hunting with dogs? If so be careful going over 9" in blade length. You have the chance of going through some of the smaller hogs and getting a dog.

Who would you guys suggest build me something like this? I would prefer one with a waiting period of less then 6 months. I have talked to two smiths and both stated around 1 year.

There are a lot of talented knife makers here! I would suggest you go look at the makers forums, and talk to some of those folks. Have you taken up Tom Krein's offer to talk pig knives with him?

I make this subhilt with an 8 inch blade. The top clip is sharpened enough to help with penetration, but not enough to cut you if you just were handling it. It could be angled more for more cutting ability. I use this style knife for cutting demos and hard use and think it would make a good hog knife. I killed a large boar with another of my knives, but it hade an 11 inch blade.
