Have you run a full scan disk to try and repair the errors? Open my computer, right click on the drive and select properties. Go to tools, and click check drive. Check the two boxes to fix errors and do a full scan. Hopefully this will sort the problem out!

If the problem is that the files are in use by another program, then that is another story! :p

There was also a program that can delete files before windows starts, so that the windows cannot "protect" the files. Try googling, if you can't find any solution, I will help you later on when I get out of work. It has worked nicely on my pc.

Under account with admin rights do take over of the owner rights.

If it doesn't help you can try to delete them in emergency mode.

You can also run the computer from an operating system on a USB drive, floppy, or CD. That will give you access to the hard drive without having Windows running.

What kinda message do you get when you try to delete?

Are they in a Folder?
Can you select the folder and click 'cut' then paste it into the Recycle Bin?

I've ran into problems before with some files not wanting to delete and It just takes some creative methods.

do a search for a program called "cureit" by dr web. download the program and start it up. it will do a startup scan right off the bat so wait for it to finish. after it finishes, select c drive and click the start button located on the far right. if it "pops up a box" asking you to delete what it finds, click ok. anything else it finds and puts in the list must be googled to find out what it is before deciding what to do. some things it finds sometimes turns out to be part of an actual program and are nothing to worry about. if it finds your pictures, it will delete them when you click yes. i hope this helps.

The times I have run into this problem, I had to start a command prompt, open task manager, shut down explorer, then delete the files manually with the command line. After the files were deleted, switch back to task manager and start new process explorer.exe and I was back up and running without even rebooting.

That would be funny giving a relative a hard drive with porn pics on it. LMAO. That would make great Thanksgiving/Family reunion conversation.

Since you are giving away this machine, I assume you have a new one?

Pull the drive, put it in another computer. Check your bios to be sure you are booting on your usual drive in the other computer, not the this one (never seen it happen, but weird stuff has been the theme of the week and it is only monday). Give it a wack.

Alternatively, the afore mentioned external OS (CD, USB drive, et al).

And if you want to get playful, create a new user profile. If the dirty files are in the "my documents" section of the old profile, and you blow away that profile, you can keep the apps and lose the bits that are being naughty.

you must have ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS to delete files then you must set the files ATTRIBUTES to read/write you will be able to delete after that.

Get ubunta from Linux, then download all the programs that inlaws need FREE.

Open Office will do most anything that Microsoft's Office will do, plus many other free programs.

Well, if they are corrupt, she can't see the contents. However as the man says, boot to safe mode, Tap the F8 Function key as the computer is booting and from the screen choose Safe Mode. Safe mode loads minimal drivers and Terminate and Stay Resident Programs. It is TSRs that try and protect your computer.

Having said that, you should really use FDISK to break partitions which will scrub the drive, reformat, then reload Winderz and the programs she wants.

I think it's pretty clear what kind it is now. :D

Like said before, try safe mode first, if still doesn't work tell us what's the error message.
