I recently picked up a BM 730 Ares - 154 CM blade. Try as I may with my Sharpmaker 204, I can't get it sharp like my good 'ol Delicas. Any help?

This would be better for the Benchmade Forum at Benchmade.com, or the Blade Discussion Forum.

However, the question was asked in the main forum a couple days ago. Not in comparison with Spyderco but in general. It seems that Benchmade's blades are much more difficult to sharpen. You generally have to take alot of material off, because their knives are sharpened by hand and the angles aren't standard or even. Then work it with a really fine stone for quite a while. I don't know if it will turn out like a delica, but you should be able to get a good edge.

You might have to rebevel the knife with a coarser stone first. You can do it with a sharpmaker, too. But it would take a while. So rebevel with a coarse stone and then sharpen with the sharpmaker. That worked quite well for my BM Ascent.

well maybe i have just been lucky, but no probs sharpening my BM AFCK or stryker (w/a chisel edge) - nor have i had probs w/spydies - now my emerson CQC7, w/a chisel edge, now that is a different subject, lol

I, too, have a BM 730 which I have a problem getting the edge near closer to the tip sharp (that part of the blade on mine came with a thicker edge). My other BM's don't have that problem. I will probably wait until Spyderco's diamond rods come out to continue working on it (I worked on the 730's edge for a long time, but near the tip felt duller and duller). Haven't had the problem with my other knives, though.

Swap the ugly 730 for a good old Spydie! Just think, you could have had a Military or Starmate...
