Well, i've been looking around for a new spinning reel (i have my baitcaster covered). So, i was debating between the Daiwa Regal XiA (RG-3000XiA) and the Okuma Epixor (EF 40b) and possibly the Pflueger President (6740) if it's worth it. Any help would be appreciated, it's been a while since i bought a reel!

Just my thoughts here. I have one of each of the reels you described. I like the Okuma the best. In fact I have three of those.

I have been leaning more towards the okuma also, but since they all had similar features, i figured id ask and read up on them online since none of the stores around me carry them. I found the okuma on cabelas for like 65$ but found it elsewhere for about 20$ cheaper. My price range is 65 or under, no higher. I still need to buy a rod too, hooked into a huge pickerel and it snapped my 7' med action rod like nothin. My current (or was) setup is a Mitchell Avocet silver series with spiderwire super mono xxx in 10lb clear on a shakespeare expedition 7' med action two piece spinning rod. I had 50$ and since my old shimano setup had finally had it after many years of hard labor, and i'm currently jobless, i had to get a new setup and it was the best i could do. I cringed at the thought of settling for walmart gear, but hey, its getting my by this season just fine, til this happened. I'm happy with the reel, but i'd like something better. I'm thinking about buying a med action 6'6" 2 piece ugly stik. I love the 1 piece i have for my baitcaster, which i kind of want a 2 piece for that also.

While WalMart has there own problems. They do carry a nice Abu Garcia spinning rod for something like $48.00. I have a few of those for my baitcaster set ups as well. The only thing is, the spinning rods are 2pc rods but the baitcasting rods are a single. The one thing I really like about those rods is the guides. The guides they use really allow the line to move with little to no resistance.

Dicks Sporting goods usually has good deals on Okuma reels. Wal Mart unfortunatley ( at least in my area) does not have any deals in that department.

You'll like that reel

I was thinking of ordering online. Anyone know anything better i could order online for 65 or less? I know i'm getting a 2 piece 6'6" medium ugly stik, love those things!

Just a comment for info. The Hannon Wave Cast system works. It really does cut down on snarls that are endemic to spinning reels and casts with less effort. In the interest of full disclosure, the one I have does not retrieve as smoothly as I would like.

I have a common complaint about today's spinning reels. They tend to fall apart! I used one of the original Mitchell 300's for nearly 20 years with no mechanical problems other than occasionally replacing a broken bail spring. I can't get through a year with the modern products.
No such problems with the Hannon yet, but I haven't used it a lot, either.

$60 (the going price, I rarely see Shimano products discounted on line) at Tackle Warehouse.
I like mine :)

I'm sorry, I thought the link went to the tackle warehouse page.
Yes the Sedona series.
I'm at work and don't remember the size of mine, but it is on a 7' MH Scimitar (shimano) rod and use it for light saltwater and LMB.
I think it is the 4000. Filled with 20lb PowerPro.
Pick the size to match the rod that you get.

After many open faced spinning reels, I only buy Shimano Stadic reels these days in whatever size seems to work. I use the ultra light (1000 I believe) for trout and the middle size (2500) for big water where I might hook something a bit larger. The 2500 size is a good all around size.

Hmmmmm, so many choices! I have a horrible setup right now, but i guess it works for now. The rod im using is my girlfriends shes had for 10+ years with plastic guide inserts, a 5'6" shakespeare with my mitchell avocet on it. I hook up fish just the same because the rod doesnt catch the fish i do :-) but i like being able to depend on my gear.

Ebbtide, how do you like that Scimitar rod?

I bought two Scimitar rods (MH casting & MH spinning, both 7') and the Sedona reel for $60 at a Sports Authority tent sale.
So I won't complain too much.
They are OK.
I keep them as my bad neighborhood East River rods...
Decent feel, not too heavy, a little short in the handle for light saltwater (striped bass & bluefish).
Very fast actions, no parabolic action here.
Some like fast rods, some don't. They cast far (1 oz bucktails) but lose small fish easily (because they unload so quick).

The tip broke off the spinner (I think it happened in my buddy's truck) and I ripped off a guide on the caster.
Not much flex on the cast... the jig must've caught the guide.
Re-wrapped the guide on the rod.
The spinner got the highest guide removed and a new tip put on.
I can't blame the rods for either breakage.
Simple fixes, they still catch fish :D

for fresh i'm using okumas...i really like shimano products; nearly all my salt gear is shimano, but okumas are really good value and performers for freshwater fishing...of the okuma lines, i've got 5 epixors in different sizes...

rods; i like berkleys...i know using some of those $80-100+ brands would be sweet, but i don't find the price/performance acceptable to me for basically ultra light trout fishing...

As much as I hate to admit it, Shimano gear is the only stuff I have ever used that came remotely close to the feel of the REAL Miami made Fin-Nor reels (not the new stuff made in the Carolinas) which, by most accounts, were the best salt water rigs ever made.

I have both the Daiwa (larger size) and the Pflueger President. Of the two, the President is a bit nicer. Most of my reels are Shimano and I would 2nd Ebbtide's recommendation of the Shimano over either the Daiwa or Pflueger. I've also had good luck with the BPS Graphite series rods. I picked up a 2 piece 6'6" M spinning rod for under $20 on sale. A bass guide I fished with used these rods for his clients and they hold up well.
