Help choosing Hapstone clamps

I have an M3 currently and want to convert it to a clamp based system. I sharpen mostly folding edc knives max 4” in length currently. I have a lot of spyderco FFG blades. The central Y-shaped clamp seems similar to a KME style clamp. Funds are an issue, but I don’t want to make the mistake of needing buy the other one down the road. I’m just looking for those who have either or both to share their experience with them. I’m debating between the central Y-shaped clamp

or the two angle clamps

I have the two angle clamps and the two mini clamps that I bought extra. If I did it over I would have bought the single clamp. I sharpen smaller blades mostly, 4" or less. Still, the two angle clamps work for me for what I do and I can sharpen the occasional kitchen knife. I've never used the mini clamps yet.

The bigger Y clamp would be good for most all folding knives. The Two clamp set up for fixed blades.

The angled clamps will do everything the big Y clamp does and a lot more, depending on how you position them on the machine. I think if money is an issue, the small clamps should work fine too. I can imagine that on narrow blades, the shorter clamp length, might required a steeper (bad) stone angle to keep from grinding the clamp. On most modern folders I doubt it would be a problem.

When I bought my system I got the R2 with the two angled clamps. I also got the M7 table attachment, and the scissors attachment. I bought the M7 table over the M3, because when the side table extensions are removed, it can be adapted to make a nice small blade table. The scissor attachment, gives me the ability to sharpen scissors, but more importantly, it lets me sharpen chisels, and plane irons. All together it makes for a very versatile system.

However after messing around with the R2 clamp part of it for a while. I doubt I will be using it much. I have a lot of traditional knives with small narrow secondary blades. Getting those clamped up accurately, while still not grinding the clamps, is a pain at best. I also have some ten inch kitchen knives. To do a good job on them I would need to reposition the blade in the clamps at least once. Again a pain. In between those extremes the clamps should work ok, but so does the table. I learned on a table system. I found, I'm more comfortable with the table system. So I expect my M7 head will get most of the use, and the R2 head will collect a lot of dust.

O.B.

I got the r2 lite with small clamps which on folding knives I have to set both clamps on one side. They do a solid job of holding my folding knives in place and allow me to adjust the knife pretty well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I placed my order for the large Y shaped clamp. I was leaning that way. I’ll report back with my impressions after some sharpening sessions.

Just to follow-up on this thread. I did receive the central Y-clamp and have sharpened a few blades with it now and it was definitely the way to go for small folder edc knives. It works great with spyderco FFG blades. Also as a side note, I’m finding the clamp easier to sharpen on versus the M3 table.
