I want a folder in a fairly specific size range and it must be black. I also prefer that the clip be at the head rather than the tail.

Aside from the obvious price difference, I'm considering the Benchmade 690 and the Kershaw Avalanch.

Anyone with an opinion about either of these, please speak up!

I guess it depends what you are going to use the knife for. I have a avalanche, I also gave one to my daughter. now she uses hers all the time. she works nights and its a self defense piece.
Me, I dont carry it anymore. I work in an office and like a smaller knife. also, I use my knife with food, and I can tell ya that the avalance doesnt like Mayo.
Good Luck
Jack

Hmmm...

Benchmade or Kershaw

Let's see...

Prime Rib or SPAM?

Mercedes-Benz or Yugo?

Private Gulfstream Jet or Southwest Airlines?

Steuben Crystal Glass or Dixie Cup?

Tiffany and Company or K-Mart?

Suite at the Ritz Carlton or a room at Motel Six?

But, the really neat thing about Benchmade or Kershaw is that while a nice Prime Rib dinner may easily cost twenty times what a plate of SPAM might, while A Benz might easily cost a hundred times what a Yogo is going for, while flying on your own Gulfstream might easily cost a thousand times what a ticket for the same trip on Southwest might cost, while a Steuben glass might easily cost 20,000 times what a Dixie Cup costs, while a trip to Tiffany's might easily run you a thousand times what a trip to K-Mart would, and while a night at the Ritz is easily thirty times the cost of one at Motel Six, A Benchmade is only two or three times the price of a Kershaw.

As my sainted father used to say, "The joy of low price is quickly forgotten amidst the disappointment of low quality."

so why are kershaws so bad? i like my chive....

They aren't really bad, they just can't compete with Benchmade!

BTW, if you are looking for a black knife, why are you going for the BM 690? How about a 710, 910, or 806D2?

What's to decide? Buy both.

I'm impatiently waiting for a Kershaw Scallion and a Benchmade Model 942.

You don't have to choose.

Gee, all of those superlatives are really original. Obviously I expect a quality difference. But is the Benchmade really worth double the price?

benchmade makes great knives
but so does kershaw
if you're talking about value for money, the kershaw avalanche is the one you're looking for
try ebay
they go for ~50-60 usd

a BM 690 is not double the price of an avalanche. newgraham sells the 690 for $106.....avalanche is $81. avalanche is all black---go with that one.

What's your price range and what is your size range?

I own a couple of Kershaws and several Benchmades. Neither of your choices appeal to me. I would be more likely to buy a Kershaw Boa than an Avalanche and just about any BM with an Axis lock (710, 705, 806, Gript, etc) over the 690...

Toyota maybe, but not Yugo. I don't own any Benchmades. The ones I've handled have were plenty sharp and slick. My wife's EDC is a Kershaw Blackout. It's not a prybar but it cuts just fine. Happy hunting.
