I am in the market for a new knife for hunting and chores and was very interested in the RSK MK3 (other than the luke warm reports of it's sheath) but the unknown waiting period before I can find one to purchase has made me research other options. I know that I am missing some other good options (please recommend away). Is there any problems with either of these knives other than the sharpening that I know from my 943 benchmade?

Thanks for your interest. Just FYI, we are expecting to get delivery of the new run of RSK Mk3 to KnifeWorks.com by end of October, possibly sooner. There will be a new, simpler sheath without the excess of attachment options. Just the basic nylon sheath with plastic insert.

That MK3 has a little bit longer blade length and S30V steel. Simple design, nice blade shape, nylon sheath. Looks like a great all around hunting knife. Would be my ideal specs for my carry knife on deer trips.

Do you mean KOA Alpha Wolf/Muskrat combo? If so, I just got the magnum boar hunter in D2 and the blade steel is excellent. I haven't "broken it in" yet, but it's shaving sharp and I'm happy with it for the price. The suregrip handle is grippy and comfortable, but I prefer micarta or similar. I like their combo sets for big game hunting and the leather sheaths they use are good as well. I think the muskrat is 440 steel though, which should be fine for caping and fine details, but I haven't heard any feedback on it. It looks like a great little knife, even for small deer and other mammals.

The other option is just get the two knives that you want and have a custom sheath maker make you a nice customized combo set that has both sized knives that you like to carry.

Just my .02.

I was hoping to get a new knife before hunting season as the one I have just doesn't hold an edge during skinning or gutting use on big game. Since deer / elk opens Oct 22 waiting late october for a shipment could end up being to late. I have been searching without much success for options with a similar blade profile to the RSK Mk3 (which is what I would prefer) but haven't come up with many choices. Don't like the Buck or Gerber offerings. I see that Knives of alaska has a defense / survival knife but I don't like the handle shape. Are there any other good options in a good stainless like s30v with a 5-6 drop point blade that I might be able to get before the end of october?
