Help! Dropped my Bark River on its point!

Was polishing the brass hilt with some Flitz. Got it nice and shiny again. Then I was oiling the blade to put it away and ZAP!!! Due to careless handling, the thumb of my left hand got a nice slice and, by reflex, my right hand opened up and the knife went flying.

It's the biggest knife I think Bark River ever made. It has a nine inch spear point blade, brass hilt, with Micarta handle. All that weight drove the point hard, straight down into my tile kitchen floor. Tip is folded back against the blade. Damage starts from about .05" from the tip. Easy repair with a file and a stone, or do I need professional help? Thanks.

I feel your pain. Unwrapping my first BRKT knife (Highland) I dropped it on the kitchen tile and snapped the very end of the tip off. I was horrified. I was able to fix it up ok with some stones but not a good way to start for me.

DMT 180 grit diamond stone then work your way up. When I drop my Busses on the floor the floor loses every time.

Bark River goes beyond the call of duty with their warranty even when the damage is your fault. If you send it back then they'll fix it right up for you. On the other forums someone accidentally dropped his large barkie into a oil drum full of burning brush. He snagged it out of the barrel with minimal damage. The owner of BRKT said that he shouldn't have risked himself, let it burn, and just send it back under warranty. That's standing behind his product.

You beat me to it. I just got off the phone with a BRKT distributor, and he told me the same exact thing. He said no matter how it got damaged, send it back and they will make it like knew and send it back, free of charge. That's pretty amazing. That is reason enough to stick with BRKT for all your knife needs. I just ordered another one, in fact.

Let's see if I can post a picture.

The BRKT knife in question is the one all the wa to the right. If you look close, you can see the damaged tip.

I'm not looking at the knife saying this, but if you can fix it just do so and keep on using it :D if not, send it to the factory. There's something to be said about a knife that's been through it all with us though :) that would be the reason for trying to salvage the tip yourself! I've got a few knives that even if I broke the tip OFF I'd just regrind it and or have the factory do so for me :p. I have an old Buck actually that I did that with.

I did it once on my own, too. I had a USN (United States Navy) marked knife that I broke the tip off of. Spent hours filing from the back of the blade till the back joined the edge again, making a new point. Then I stoned it till it was smooth again.

Here's a picture of it after I formed the new point.

Sweet! Mine was on a fixed hunter and it's still tickin :p....I bent the tip pretty good on my Busse Cultellus (I'd thinned it out a lot and convexed it pretty good) I was using it to start a fire with a fire starter and was a little inebriated :p.....I swiped it across a stone and did a number on the tip. When I got home the next day I bent the tip back by putting a rag over the metal and using some needle nose pliers then set to work with zeroing it back in by bending it against a piece of wood before stropping it back to razor sharp (after straightening the edge with a butcher steel).

It's working fine....I have a couple BRKT's and know they're made of quality stuff, it would probably work the same....if not and the tip breaks, you could do what you've done before or just send it to the factory for a prettier job or a new knife depending on how good of a mood they're in :D

A new one would be cool, but I don't even think they make that knife anymore. I never see it advertized anywhere, and it's not at their website.

I see a theme there... nice blades!

Speaking of dropping knives, my wife tossed a handful of kitchen knives into the sink to then get the toddler out of harm's way, and a Forschner chefs went in point first and pierced the stainless sink. I'd been wanting to replace the sink anyway so I just sealed it with epoxy paste for now.

The knife took minimal damage. Some folding back at the tip, but for a knife that thin it did pretty well.

Send it back to Bark River!

Give 'em a call - there's about a 50% chance Mike himself will answer, otherwise you'll get Donna. They'll tell you how to ship it, and they'll get it back to you looking like new. All you'll pay is the cost of shipping.

The only thing they don't repay under warrantee is damage done by badgers, so you're safe!:D
