I see knives like the ones pictured that say Schrade Walden pretty regularly. Are these authentic U.S.A. made? To me, the stamps just look fake? Then again I am looking at them with untrained eyes. I was hoping maybe some of you guys could offer a little insight.

aggiebuilder2003, I think from the pictures they are of two diffrent knives, if so both are made in the USA although not genuine Schrade Walden products, without seeing the complete picture of the knife on the left, I think that model was made by Utica cutlery and the knife on the right was made by Bear and Son Cutlery. Most of the Bear cutlery knives only have one center pivot pin and none beside each bolster. These knives were made after the closing of the original Schrade company in 2004. Special factory orders if you like commisioned through Taylor brands and initially sold through smoky mountain knife works.

Russell, thanks for the reply. The full view of the knife on the left is pictured below. If I understand you correctly, Taylor "subcontracted out" remaining special orders to other U.S. firms to get them out the door? I see these all of the time, and I've even seen one or two with plastic Schrade Walden tubes accompanying them. Were there ever any authentic Schrade Waldens produced that looked similar to the one in this picture?

I'm not Russell, But, IIRC the plastic tube knives were contracted to Camillus(via Taylor brands LLC) prior to their closeure in 2007 the tube & paperwork look authentic (until) you look at the FINE PRINT on the paperwork:grumpy:

There were NO authentic SW era knives that looked like the above mentioned knife!;)

Spot on 6.0stroker! aggiebuilder2003, The larger pic of the knife still makes me think that model was made by Utica. Many people have fell foul of these knives thinking they were genuine Schrade Walden products, you really have to watch out. Generally in themselves there not bad knives! there has been a lot of discussion on this forum some trime back when these knives first made their appearance. Most Schradeaholics here have denounced these offerings as a ploy to deceive the uneducated.

I had a sneaking suspicion they were not authentic when all of the ones I've seen had no model numbers on them. I too have been taken in by one such as these. Fortunately, it was a cheap lesson learned. Thanks so much for all of your help Russell and 6.0stroker. I have a nephew that will be old enough to carry a knife in a year or two. I think it would be a good one for him to keep when the time is right. Then when he eventually looses it, it won't hurt so bad! :D

That's a very commendable idea! I'm sure he will treasure it.

I have one of these Camillus knives, a brown bone 4 1/8 inch two blade trapper. It is a high quality knife. I now know more than when I bought it, but I have no regrets, even though I have buckets full of the "real" stuff. This is a nice knife.

I recently bought 2 Camillus made Schrade Waldens, mdl # 11897 (BTW, not a Schrade number).

I bought them because I also collect Camillus knives & these are excellent examples of a fine Camillus SFO.

These are very nice knives, just not Schrades.

Dale,

I just found a Camillus 75th Anniversary Boy Scouts of America 1910-1985 knife this past weekend. As you know, I am a Schrade guy, however, I just couldn't pass this one up. The knife is in excellent condition and I had to bring her home. I'll post a picture as soon as the weather breaks and I can get outside for a good shot.

Tom,
I will be watching for pics.
IMHO, I think Camillus made some of the best, most solidly constructed camper pattern knives.
They are just about bullet proof.
