I was hoping to get some help from you guys on a project I am working on. Can anyone think of a Production knife that fits the following specs?
1. Fixed blade 3 1/2-4 inch long blade with a full tang
2. Flat Grind
3. 1/8 inch thick or less
4. Inexpensive (cheap if possible)

Besides RAT Cutlery, Cold Steel Master Hunter, and Ontario TAK I can't think of too many other production companies that make something this simple .

Thanks

The Spyderco Mules would fit that description I believe. They've got a full flat grind, the steel stock is 1/8 inch, and the cutting edge is 3 & 5/16

no pics but here is a link to the knife on spyderco's site Spyderco S90v Mule. they come without a handle but paracord wrap is cheap and easy if you don't want to make your own. The current version is in S90v, if that is not to your liking the previous versions can still be found floating around for sale every once in a while, the first was done in 52100 and the second in CPM M4 I believe.

IIRC,the Master Hunter is 3/16" thick. The first thing that comes to mind that meets all of your criteria is an Old Hickory butcher knife. Available at wally world and other such .

Ruben, get with Joezilla and see about scorin one of those new Condor knives. They fit your requirements......

Buck diamond back guide - its actually full (or nearly so) tang, but hollow grind. Still can be had for $20.

What about a Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf?

Thickness: 0.100"
Steel: D2
Rockwell Hardness: 59-61
Bevel: 18-20
Knife Length: 7-7/8"
Blade Length: 3-3/4
Price: 76.99

It fits most of your criteria. I wouldn't call that price cheap, but its not a bad deal either. It doesn't say on their website what the grind is, but I just bought my Dad a Elk Hunter from KOA and I'm pretty it is flat ground.

There are a lot of custom makers here on the forum that will do you wright for less than a bill. A lot of small knives for 65.00 to 75.00
You cant beat the economy of an "Old Hickory" but take a look at the work of some of these guys, DPKnives, Mykulmorris, Landi, Koyote, Fiddleback, there are a lot more and I don't mean to slight any of them but there are deals wright now by these makers.
Then there are makers like Phillip Patton who dose some of the most beautiful work I have ever seen and nearly gives it away.

Have you looked at the grohmann knives most of them can be ordered with the flat ground blade http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/flatgrinds.html there prices aren't to bad

+1

Also, note that the mainstays of the Grohmann line are available in kit form. The blades are fully ground, sharpened, and finished, and the kits come with pre-shaped, pre-drilled handles and rivets. If you have a belt sander, you could finish one up in about 20 minutes, and they are cheaper than the 'completed' knives.

I recommend the #1, in flat grind.

All the best,

- Mike

Another +1 on the Grohmanns. I own two and they are great slicers with strong points, although neither of mine is FFG I would highly recommend taking a look at them.

I'm almost convinced that them Canadians make some pretty good stuff ;)

Made my first grohmann kit knife at the world boyscout jamboree in 1981, made another 5 years ago and they are great blades. Good pouch style leather sheaths as well. They make them in stainless and carbon.
Love my Rat rc-3
Anyone know where to get the condor knives in Canada?

Already thought of it but the Carbon V is not available anymore and it makes them on the expensive side.

Checked it out nice blade but maybe too pricy for this project.

I agree about the great custom knife makers here. Love them and have worked with many but I am going to do a story on a cheap production vs. affordable custom piece.

Can't use RC-3 but it is a great knife for sure.

Grohmans look like the best idea for now.

Thanks those rock. Do they come with scales? If not that is another expense and more time. Time is not my friend these days!
