I watched a documentary style TV program once upon a time that was fascinating and have had no luck finding any info about it anywhere.

What I remember for sure is that it was a cross country race of several days involving 3 contestants. One was a seemingly well equipped backpacker, another a heavily equipped trekker pulling something like a bike trailer, the third was an native with a shoulder bag and hand carrying a canvas desert water bag.

Sketchy memory is that the setting was the Australian outback and they had to cross mountains. I think the aborigine won and the trailer guy was a close second. The backpack guy didn't finish.

For the life of me I can't even pin down when I watched the program aside from it was probably in the last 20 years but I sure would like to watch it again.

Anybody else here that remembers?

It was Rüdiger Nehberg, Germanys survivor #1.
He's the German equivalent of Ray Mears or Les Stroud (NOT Bear Grylls!), and he's been at it for a long time (he's about 70 now!).

I'll try to find the film you are talking about (I have seen it too, but don't have a copy of it). Maybe I can dig something up....

No wonder I couldn't find it! It must have been dubbed or subtitled for the English speaking audience. All I can get from the Amazon.de description is the three names and the 700km distance. Was it a study in "light and fast" versus "prepared for every contingency" heavy?

I've been in touch with the people who distributes the film, and sadly, it seems noone else than ronin films showed any interest in distributing the film. This means that it's close to impossible to find it outside Australia, which i find infuriating to say the least.
A really good watch it is too. I wish i knew someone in Australia who could send it to me.

It's definitely been shown as an English version in the UK - I saw it as 'the amazing race' or something similar. The best bit was when they were trying to make the Aboriginal guy take some equipment as he really didn't want (or need) any!

I recall that the American adventure racer won but he was in poor shape at the end. The Aboriginal guy was last but looked as fresh as when he started!

I keep hoping for a repeat too.

I couldn't recall who did what for certain.

that stinks, I can't seem to find any information on when Stakeout comes out... dying to see that film.

Huh? Something to do with the Nehberg film?
