I am wanting to get a fixed blade but do not know what I should get.I like the SOG seal knife 2000 but the blade is AUS 8. From what I have read it is not a good steel. What fixed blade should I get? It need to a tough knife maybe carbon steel blade. I don't know I'm new at this. Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

You shouldn't believe everything you read.

AUS-8 is a good cutlery steel. Perhaps a high carbon would work better for you, but that would really depend on your intended use.

If you're "new at this," then you'd likely be just fine with AUS-8. It's one of my favorite steels -- by no means is it bad. It might be below average (depends what you're including in the average) in edge-holding ability, but it excels in a lot of other areas.

That said, I'll also suggest Swamp Rat, and if you're willing to spend even more, maybe look for a Strider that'll fit the bill.

If you like the SOG, maybe take a look at Fallkniven. Also stainless blade(the VG-10 is much nicer than AUS8), and a rubber type handle, but much better overall IMHO. Also check out the Spyderco Temperance and Perrin.

For me, carbon steel is the way to go, though. IF you are buying a knife for toughness, that is, and it's 6" or longer. Smaller than that, I would buy something in D2 form Bob Dozier.
You can still find Marbles 7" trailmakers in 52100 on the net.

Hope this helps

If you can tell us your intended use, or specific blades that you've seen that you liked, we can probably give you specific reccomendations.

If you are going to spend the bucks for the Strider, take a look at Randall Mades as well. They are superb knives with more traditional designs, including good, large crossguards. I have a Model 14, which is as good a combat knife as you will ever find.

The Simonich Midtech Raven looks promising for a stainless knife. It is made with S30V stainless steel, which some predict will replace ATS-34 as the most popular high end stainless.

Don't worry about the blade of the SOG Seal 2000 being made out of AUS-6 steel. It really ISN'T all THAT bad of a steel. And the Seal 2000 is a VERY good, sturdy knife, that feels "just right" (in my hand). If you want to spend alittle more $, then there is always the (AUS-8) SOG Trident to take a look at.

Benchmade Nimravus Model 140. It has 154CM Stainless Steel Full tang blade with BT2 coating that is 4.5" long and has sculpted G-10 handles The sheath is fitted Kydex.Absolutely great knife MSRP $154.95

I'm also looking to buy a fixed bladed knife, so instead of making a new thread, I figured I'd post here;)

The SOG Seal knives are great, but they look more like pure fighters to me...I want something that could be used for that, but moreso as a light duty brush/branch clearing tool, in the range of $50-80 or so.

So far, I've looked at:
Becker Knife & Tool
Colt® Jungle Commander®
ONTARIO Spec Plus Marine Raider

I know the Becker is real tough and all and I've read a review of the Ontario knife that put it through trials. Anyone know about the Colt? It looks sweet...:)

Any other recommendations following my guidlines are appreciated:):)

Warthog

Three words, Get a Greco. They’re Strong reliable and within the 50-80 dollar range. :D they seam to fit your bill perfectly. :D

does anyone have a swamprat? I was looking at the web site today and they look like they are good knives

I don't own a Swamp Rat but everything I read about them is very positive. Busse has a fanatical following.

Check CQC Tactical for John Greco's new large knife. It will most likely be a good one.

I don't see much endorsement of the Colt knives. The Jungle Commander is only 440A steel. Cliff Stamp has seen alot of quality control problems in Ontario Spec Plus knives, such as poor heat treatments. Beckers get good reviews but have handles some find too slippery. Beckers are the only knives I have ever accidently cut myself with, and it was due to the slippery handles.
