Ok so I took the kid out to find one he would like and ran into a little problem...

He likes the plunge lock release for closing that most of the gerbers have but doesnt like the thumb stud openers (he prefers a flipper)

After some looking around I couldnt find such a knife... Im sure it exists out there someplace but a little help would be appreciated.

I guess Im also looking for something most people here would probably consider fairly cheap too but right now Im open to any options.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by plunge type. My son took over my collection so be careful. I have many flippers but they are higher end. If you get the chance to check out a Benchmade Griptilian he may like the AXIS lock it's one of the best around and won't break the bank. Check out Spyderco they have some cheaper stuff and are very diverse. My advice is to let him pick out what he wants. My son chooses some stuff I don't like but I think it is more important that he is happy and will use it.

I can't think of any flippers with a button lock, but there are a ton of good flippers out there.
Kershaw has the best selection by far.

Keep in mind, on some knives what most would identify as thumbstuds are actually blade stops. They have dual functionality, but mechanically they are there to stop the blade from moving any further back.

Ah sorry to be more clear the way you close this (you just push that button and fold the blade) is what he liked. Pretty simple to do one handed etc.

Yes I personally liked a few of the kershaws.(probably buy one to replace the junker gumball machine knife I use for stuff around the house lol) But he just didnt like the way you closed them.

Ah, the button lock! It's a great lock too. I'd suggest having him look around online at the various Kershaw models or whatever is in your comfort zone as far as cost. He may end up finding something that just pops and he loves it at first sight. CRKT has a lot of knives that might fit the bill, the Tighe line of knives, some are offered with a flipper and a buton style lock, specifically the Tighe Coon, but it has thumb studs. :(

Oh it can have thumb studs thats fine. Just needs to have the flipper so he can open it that way instead :)

As far as I can tell from the ones I saw in the store and the ones Im looking at online the kershaws dont seem to have the button lock? Matter of fact so far the only ones Ive found that do are Just about all the gerber knives. Which sadly seem to all lack the flipper opener.

I found the tighe coon...and it looks perfect. Its exactly what I would be looking for... other than the 600$ price tag this one seems to have :/

Edit- nevermind that was a fancy one apparently looks like the basic is 80ish. Thats better. Still a little more than I was hoping for but at least its something in case nobody comes up with a better option.

Edit2- bah While I found it even cheaper it isnt spring assisted. Which would have been best. So close.
