Hi,

I’m trying to find a survival/wilderness/combat type knife but am having trouble and would like to get a little feedback from those more knowledgeable than I. What I’m looking for is basically a pry-bar with a sharp edge . . . . something with full tang construction and a fixed blade around 5"-7" long and a thickness between 3/16 (.19) of an inch and ¼ (.25) of an inch. As far as the steel I have been very impressed with what I’ve been reading about Crucible’s s110v & s90v. I also like what I’ve seen about the s30v & s35vn but the 110 & 90 seem to be better. Honestly though this is all new to me and I really don't know much about steels. Any tips or suggestions regarding the steel? Is there anything like this to be found as a production knife and if so, where can I find one and for how much? If a custom job is needed, can you suggest any knife makers skilled with these steels and about what I might spend on such a project?

Thanks a lot.

a classic SHTF knife is the BK 2, start with that and see how it goes, if you dont like it or want to upgrade, there is a large market for used bk2's so you can get a good bit of resale value

other options would be the Ontario RD series -- 1/4" thick 5160 carbon steel, but be prepared for the need to reshape the handles.
Scrapyard 511 (5.5" blade 3/16" thick) or 711 (7.375" blade 1/4" thick) in SR101 would be an upgrade from that.
ESEE 5 (1/4") or 6 (3/16)

and then there are the custom makers here on the forums -- some of whom do work in the CPM steels.

the powdered metallurgy steels do not deal as well with the lateral stresses involved in prying at typical hardnesses.

Start out with a BK2. The Ontario RD's aren't what they could be, or get one from Justin Gingrich himself.

You would probably want to talk to Jeremy Horton, he has a sub-forum here. He works in those fancy steels, and makes thick pry bars with character.

Honestly? Yes ... if you really want this, talk with Mr. Horton.

His work is solid. He's an honest, practical fellow.

Makes an awfully nice edge, too. I've got a few.:)

If you don't want a custom, the Beckers will definitely do what you want.

I don't have any fixed blade projects. In the works. But Les George has his VECP fixed blades on his website Hard Chromed 3v. Hard to beat for the money. And a great guy. Thanks everyone. J

As 1066vik mentioned , the Scrap Yard 711 would be a great choise . The resiprene-c handles are great and help make the knife light for it's length as a bonus . Scrap Yard knives are made to be hard use knives and carry a lifetime warrantee on the knife , not just the original buyer . Also the 711 happens to be avalable right now , at a very reasonable price . I personally have just recieved mine and it's a beast of a knife .
