A friend came to me thinking I know everything about knives. I'm not an expert on any knives, especially multi-tools, so I need help and have very little to go on. He saw a multi-tool advertised in a backpacker magazine and by the time he made up his mind he couldn't find the ad to get the name and model. The only other tid-bit is he said it wasn't the typical multi-tool and seemed perfect for backpacking.

ring any bells for you guys?

Ummm, I'll go with Victorinox, because I like them and for the model I'd say . . . damn, there are so many that would be good for backpacking! What did he like about it? What sort of tools did it include? How big & how heavy?
There are a butt load of great SAKs that would be worth considering - try looking at a Victorinox Ranger and if that isn't what he wants then ask why - too big, too small, lacking a certain tool, etc.

I just googled multi tool backpacker magazine went to images and this came up.

Tell him to look at a leatherman skeletool, they were getting a lot of play in backpacker magazine

Was it a pliers based MT or a SAK? At least he should remember that...
As for SAK, the best for backpacking (at least for my needs) is the Trekker. It has all the tools I want, nothing more, nothing less.
I never carried a LM or similar while backpacking...so I can't help with personal experience, just with random thoughts...
