Help finding a Traditional sheath for my 14" Tram

Hello all,

Hopefully this is a decent place to ask this. I recently bought a 14" Tramontina Trail Machete (quick shout-out to 42B, he's the man!) and I'm lacking a carry system for it, I planed on making one originally but I really like the way the traditional Central American sheaths look.

My question is, Is there a way to get a made Central America machete up here? I know one of our resident machete addict and expert Joe Flowers had some for sale awhile ago but I couldn't find any info on if that's a regular occurrence or not.

If there isn't a regular importer of Central American sheaths, do any leather workers make any for a decent price? If not, does anyone know of a pattern I could use to form my own?

If this is in the wrong forum let me know and I'll delete and repost it else where, thanks for any assistance!

I take it you're searching for the folded single-seam no-welt variety as commonly seen on hand-crafted local sheaths in Central/South America? Those are a style I don't see commonly made by anyone who doesn't do custom sword scabbards. I know JRE has done that style on some small knife sheaths, but don't think they've done anything like that quite so large.

I can't think of anyone that makes the Central/South American style sheaths aside from people down there.

Those small tramontina's are nice! And the first machetes that I started doing sheaths for. Still got the patterns. ;) My 14" Bolo was my most used machete until I started carrying a customized 12" Ontario. Now a-days I rotate between my 12" Fiddleback, 12" Ontario and 14" Bolo tram. :)

Hope you find what you are looking for.

The single up-the-back seam is used on leather Mora sheaths and similar so the process presumably could be mechanized, but yeah I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that's making machete sheaths in that style. I suppose there's always Christian Fletcher (he does custom sword fittings and scabbards) but might be massive overkill--his work isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination, though of a quality easily equal or in excess of what he charges.

That is correct!

Well, thanks for the pointers everyone. I saw Joe's video of when he went to the one shop that made them and I have an idea of the process, guess I'll have to see what I can whip up!

Pics please!

Of course! Might be awhile though, life.

I totally understand. The next time I go into the City, I may pick up some Rawhide for a project or two. This thread gets me wondering if I could make the seam up the back sheaths with it. . . . Just like you, it would be a while before anything like that happens.

Picked this up here for my 14"er a while back, it was pretty rugged except the button snap broke after the third or so time opening it. the tram and sheath were sold by me a month back though.

Was only 20 bucks, I imagine the guy wasn't making too much profit off them.
I am going to try and find some old emails for you, maybe he still makes them.

Liam, that was one of my first sheaths. You are correct, there wasn't much profit on those first sheaths. Snaps can be finicky at times, I do what I can to keep problems down, sorry you got a dud. I replace them free of charge, if you still had it, I'd have a replacement strap off to you today. If the new owner wants a keeper strap, have them email me.

By the way, nice looking woods combo you have there. I love seeing users! :)

Imagine that, your name looks familiar now, lol.
You know, I liked it better without the snap actually, easy in and out with one hand and such, so it was a mixed blessing.
Good to know you are still doing it though, I really want to make my own someday as well.

I bought one from Joe and keep my 18" Tram I'm it. I'll try to get a picture up soon.
