Could my fellow knifenuts help me with one question. I'm looking for a fixed blade knife with a blade length of at least 6 inches to carry for edc, survival and self defense. It should preferably be less than $150. I live in Florida, so anything is legal to carry in public, unconcealed. And if the general public can't take screw 'em. I'm thinking of the Becker Brute and the SOG Pentagon (an exception to the length). Any ideas?

A Becker 7 Combat Utility would be right up your alley. Cold Steel makes many products that fit the bill - the SRk and the Recon Scout are very nice. Now that the UWK is out in Carbon V, you mmight give it a shot.

The largest fixed blade I can carry on my standard day uniform is the Shivworks Loco. :(. At least the attitude here is pretty relaxed towards knives.

Just a bit of advice - unless you are using AIM and are under 14, it isn't necessary or desirable to have more than one ! or ? folowing a sentance.

Respectfully,
Will

I would consider the Cold Steel Recon Scout. The blade shape works both for general utility and for self defense. The handle shape and the balance would also work well for some utility chopping and self defense slashing. It is a carbon steel blade which makes it a bit more durable than stainless knives.

though blade length is not an issue for u, but do u feel comfortable to carry a 6 incher for edc? the weight, and size.. etc. I would suggest something light and leaner, like the BM Nimravus.

Hey Hey

There a lot of good custom makers who would be more than happy to help you get something personal and practical in that price range, (myself included). Got a Few pics On the Canadian connection. But I'm sure any good Knife maker could set you up nicely.

My first thought is that any knife that will be used for those three different functions -- edc, survival, and self defense -- will have to be a compromise. A survival knife and a self defense knife have, by their very nature, different attributes. And neither is the most convient to carry.

Is a 6" blade legal to carry where you live? In Texas it's 5.5" -- and the knife a usually carry when I'm most likely to be in harms way is the Benchmade Nimvarus Cub with the 3.5" blade, even though I have the larger 4.5" blade model -- and also have several other "fighting" style knives with longer blades.

The CS SRK would, imo, be a good compromise, as would a "KA-BAR" style knife. I wouldn't mind having my Swamp Rat Howling Rat in a self-defense situtation either.

However, if it were me I'd go for a heavy duty folding knife with about a 4" blade for an all purpose knife.

Agree with the smaller blade rationale. Recently I feel comfortable enough to carry only my Spyderco Delica as my all purpose carry. Won't mind something longer, and 4 inches max seems to be good enough to me too. Basically if someone really need something sharp for self-defence, almost anything will do - the best weapon is wit.

Cutlery Shoppe / Gryphon boot knife / Kydex sheath/scabbard - perfect choice for your needs.

Fälkniven A1 might be worth considering about. Just got mine a few days ago and think it's a great knife.
