My best friend knows about my love (obsession) with knives so he reached out to me for some advice. He wants to get his grandfather a nice traditional pocket knife for Christmas. His grandfather is a wealthy but very down to earth guy. He enjoys the outdoors (hunting, fishing, spending time in the woods), likes to smoke nice cigars, and is as far as I am concerned the most generous person I know. I really want to help my friend out here because his grandfather has done a lot for me. I suggested he look into Northwoods and Great Eastern Cutlery. I sent him pictures of the new charred barrel beer scout, the red bone handled lick creek boys knife, and a #54 in autumn camel bone because those were what i was able to find available for sale. He did not seem too excited about any of those

Can you guys help me out? I need some suggestions on what knife I should point him toward. Im running into the issue that most of the nicer ones are no longer available, so some direction in where i can purchase them would also be helpful. In terms of budge i would say under $200 but for the perfect knife he would probably spend more.

Thank you for any help.

Did he give reasons for not responding favorably to your suggestions? What's he thinking of? And is this gift from you or from him. If from you, then your gut reaction is the one to follow. If from him, he needs to be more forthcoming.

The gift will be from him specifically. He can not really be more forthcoming because he is not into traditional knives that much so he does not know what is out there. He also does not know what he wants specifically which is why he asked me for suggestions. So I am just trying to see what would be recommended, that i could run past him. All i know is he wants something that his grandfather can get use out of and is well made

Figure out if he wants a fixed or folder, big or small, common or uncommon materials , etc. At the price point(s) your talking about a custom of some kind could certainly be in the picture. Without more information you're acting in a vacuum, as it were. You could find a nice older northwoods for that, or on a lucky day a fiddleback forge or Dozier. Seems like you just don't know enough to give him the good answer or variety of options he might be looking for, imho.
Thanks, Neal

I think a GEC #72 may be closer to a "Hunter" style knife he is familiar with and also readily available.

i guess I should have put that in my question. He definitely wants a folder. I know I'm asking a very broad question here I was just hoping for some recommendations based upon what you guys would get for an outdoorsy older guy. The only thing keeping me from suggesting a custom is it wouldn't be done by Christmas. He sprung this on me kind of last minute. I do appreciate the feedback though

Oh I completely forgot about those! I think there are still some of the purple bone ones floating around for sale as well. Thank you for reminding me

I have the Grizzly Cut bone, i think there are some of those around also. I was trying to remember if there were any Northfield stag versions also.

It's double your friend's stated budget, but he should look into the Case/Tony Bose collab wharncliffe trapper. Next best thing to getting a custom. Extremely well-made, but understated. Sounds like just the thing for his grandfather.

I had no idea those even existed. They are gorgeous. I will run it by him. Thank you for the suggestion

The last that I looked , there were still some 72 Stags out there . Some of them not real good Stag but then there was some that was OK only. Some people do not like stag , but for me , it is the ultimate except for mammoth . But if you can find any 73 Stag , I would go for them.

I think the #72 in grizzly cut bone is one of the best looking knives GEC has made in a while and I agree that it may appeal to the outdoorsy type, being a lockback and all. They are still in stock.
Perhaps you might also suggest a #35. It does not scream "outdoors-man," but it would make an extremely classy gift. There may be some forum knives still for sale and there are some CC SFO's on auction sites. I feel like that knife just has "ooo, nice" written all over it. Also, the recipient might dig the cigar pattern, considering his other proclivities :)
