Both my dad and I are in the market for a new EDC and I'm hoping you guys can suggest some knives that fit our individual needs.

#1
After ridding myself of the M-16 EDC curse, I'm left with nothing in my pocket. I'm a SOG fan but I'm open to most anything. I was looking at the Kershaw Chive and Leek but I'm not a huge fan of liner locks (perhaps because I haven't handled a quality example).

What I'm looking for:
  1. I'd like something small enough to be carried inconspicuously in jeans yet large enough to handle a variety of tasks.
  2. I have an affinity for assisted knives, though it's not absolutely necessary.
  3. $50-$120. Maybe slightly more if the quality warrants the price.

This knife is going to be for my dad. He's a submariner and, after the loss of a friend in an accident, he is looking for a knife to carry mostly as a safety percaution should he have to cut the tether on his auto-inflate. However, it will also see use for everyday tasks. He really likes my Flash II so I'd like to get him something similar.

What he's looking for:
  1. A partially serrated blade (Size isn't too much of a concern).
  2. Assisted opening, though he may also be interested in a fixed blade.
  3. $50-$150

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

If you like SOG, give the trident a try. Kershaw Boa is a nice assisted opener. Rat-3 fixed blade is very nice, and you might also look at a mini manix for yourself.

Spyderco Endura or Delica - Hard to beat for around $50

I second the Endura 4 for yourself.
For your dad, since he wants assited opening, I'd recomend a SOG Flash II or Kershaw Leek.

Theres a lot more out there than SOG, but they produce some good knives at great prices. Two of my favorites have been the Twitch II and the Flash II. For a large folder, I would go for the Flash II, for a smaller folder, the Twitch II. The Flash II comes in lots of different handle materials, the Twitch I believe was available in several different blade styles. I don't own any SOG products any more, but I do miss my Twitch II. Only got rid of it because assisted opening had fallen out of favor with me, then about six months later, I was told that SOG could remove the spring for me.

For your dad, in particular, I would recommend one of the Spyderco Salts...maybe with serrations.

For yourself, take a look at the other Spydercos...for the price they are hard to beat, IMHO.

Good luck on finding the right knife your both yourself and your dad.

:)
