New guy here. I've always liked the looks and reputation of the Emersons. I can't quite step up to the customs, but I am going to purchase a production model. Now... Which one? Commander? Raven? Spec? Then.. where do I get one? I'm in Illinois.

Help please!

Cheers!

Hiya Birch, and welcome. Get yourself a Commander. Why? Because they're the BEST!
I'm sure the Suspects here can give you the low-down on the best prices in town, but I highly recommend Larry@bladeart.com www.bladeart.com
Larry is one of the best dealers around and he'll check the blade out for you thoroughly before he ships it to you. Larry is a straight-up Knife Guy, and he makes sure that his customers don't get stuck with a lame piece. You might find a better price, but you won't find better service.
Good luck to you, and stick around. There's alot of great guys here at the Emerson Forum.

www.discountknives.com has the best prices I have found on the net. www.1sks.com and www.knifeoutlet.com are not far behind on prices. I have only dealt with Knife Outlet before, and the service was fine, but I never had any problems, so I can;t really speak for what their service is on the tail end. I hear that 1SKS will match prices, and from what I have read, their service is great. I think I will start using them, as buying through them helps support bladeforums also.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong.

OK, ok. I was leaning towards the commander anyways. Next dumb question... do I go serrated?

You get the point. They are only available from Extreme Outfitters at www.tacticaledge.com. You can get tanto or spearpoint, Black-T or Green-T, and they're all 50% serrated. I think this is EKI's best knife. You can't go wrong.

Have both serrated and un-serrated Commanders. Prefer plain blade by a wide margin. don't have to sharpen serrations. Only knife I like with serrations is SARK. Dick

I prefer partial serrations, but only because I tend to cut quite a bit of rope and bailing twine here at my ranch. Simply a matter of preference. A blade with teeth just offers more utility for me.

Commander, partially serrated.
I agree that plain edge has a bit more "class" , if you can call it that, but my Commander is not my "classy" knife. I feel as though partial serrations offer more utility.

Well... no one mentioned it, but it was a deal that I couldn't pass up... My new CQC7A just arrived today.... Very sweet. I'm very happy... Now on to that Commander, or Spec-war, or...

Cheers!
