Looking for a folding hunter for a friend. He will be gutting deer with it and generally beating the tar out of it. He would like it to be easily disassembled for cleaning. He does not like a wide blade, but length is not an issue. I would like too keep it under $150 if possible...

I was thinking frame lock over lockback for disassembly purposes, but any suggestions are welcome, of course.

Thanks in advance.

As long as you get the right wrench for the pivot screw the Benchmade Monochrome would be a good choice. It is all stainless steel with an integral frame lock. It has a good blade design and a good alloy. It is even pretty inexpensive. You don't really have to disassemble it to do a pretty good cleaning job. The stainless steel won't absorb odors:

You can get them for less than list price:

It's got a really good blade profile for a "hunter", it's a Titanium handled (no staining the handle) frame-lock, it has an open design (very easy cleaning), and it can be had for $150 or under (street price).

Best wishes,

Go to Cabelas website and look at the Guide series buck PBS crosslock. S30V main blade and a second blade with a great gut hook and a pull saw...If gutting deer is the main purpose, you can't beat this knife.

My advice is to forget about taking the knife apart for cleaning...just get a Spyderco Salt 1, Atlantic Salt, Tasman Salt, or Pacific Salt.

And when it needs cleaning, just throw it in the dishwasher.

Happy hunting,
Allen.

As expected, some fabulous replies. Thank you for all of the suggestions.

The Salt suggestion is interesting. I never thought of the dishwasher idea...

I am surprised at the price of that Buck Crosslock in S30V...wow. Great deal.

Yuppers!! Great knife! You won't have to worry about taking it apart!!!

If you can find one of the Case Blackhorn folders it sounds like what he is looking for. The snap apart design makes cleaning it a cinch. It is not a flimsy design either. This is a quality made folder. I do wish the blade steel was a little better but the truth is it gets the job done. This one of mine was my constant companion for many hunting trips. I've field dressed all game animals with it and washed it out in streams many times. You might note that I added the thumb stud and pocket clip myself. They don't come that way if you find one. I've seen several of these come up now and then for sale and every now and then they show up in shows at a booth. I almost bought one of the olive green ones last gun show I was at but in the end turned it down since it had been sharpened so much.

Good knives but prolly won't hold an edge for to long when gutting a deer. I second the mini-skirmish.

I would strongly suggest that you take a look at the Fallkniven WM1.
It is not a folder, it is a small fixed blade that does not weigh more, nor does it take up more space than a folder. And it does everything you ask for.

Let me say this another way: I love folders. I have a large collection of them, and I only have 2 or 3 large fixed blades. Being a "folder guy", the fact that I love the WM1 so much, really tells the story.
I honestly believe that it is one of the best knives I have ever seen, because of the ergonomics and the quality.

Nice knife. I have already given him a nice fixed blade - Fox River from BRK&T. He does most of his work with that blade and loves it. I'm not entirely sure why he wants the folder when he carries that...he is stubborn like a pack mule though...so a folder it must be!:D

I carry a fixed blade EDC most of the time too. I do appreciate them greatly!

I would also have to be sure to leave out the fact that the knife was made especially for women....
