Hi, I am new to this forum and would like some help if I could.

My nephew is headed to Iraq. He doesn't care for the current issue bayonet and I would like to get him a 'fighting' knife.

I have a couple in mind and would like your thoughts on them

First of all the Al Mar Shiva
Second the SOG Tech Bowie

I would really like to get him an original WW2 M3 Trench knife, but I don't know about sending a 60+ yr old product out.

Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks and BTW, GREAT FORUMS!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Before you decide on a knife to send, find out for sure if he can even have it, since some units will not authorize carrying them. Then be sure it is something he will need, since the extra weight piles up in a hurry.

I hope a few of our Iraq "graduates" will chime in with what they would recommend, but consider the utility of a good multitool or tactical folder before you go for a more specialized blade.

+1 to what esav said.

i'd say no on the m3 original. there may be a similar knife on the market. also, look into kabar if you want a fixed blade for him.

Keep it cheap. No sense spending a lot on a knife that may grow legs when it gets there and if it's any use at all, will not get babied. Tried-and-true has a lot going for it -- we don't hear complaints about a Ka-Bar in the field, military or civilian.

+1 again to what esav said

the tried and true kabar is offered now in more modern materials, if his fancy goes there. i prefer the traditional.

Would he have the appropriate security clearance to purchase and carry a Darkops knife?

Would anybody?

I would recommend something from the RAT line. The RAT5 would be a good utility belt knife, the model 1 is agreat folder, and the RAT3 is a great alternative to a folder. The SOG powerlock is an awesome multi, but you can't go wrong with something from Gerber in the way of the multitool. I will be heading off to the sandbox in 2007 and the above is what I will be packing. Cold Steel also has some nice knives worth looking at.

HI,
I'm assuming he was referring to the M9 which is actually an excellent fight knife. As an "add on" you might consider a short Ka-Bar.

Thanks for all of your replies, I do appreciate them. I was poking around on the site last night and ran across a mfg that I had not heard of before, Busse knives. I did a search on some of the knife retailers and could not find anyone that sells them. I guess that they might have to be ordered directly.

I might get one of these for my own battle kniofe requirements...well, not so much of a requirement as "I just want one" :-)

Anyway, I think that I'll get him a Ka-Bar. A number of the guys here said that the 1095 steel is awesome when it come to holding an edge...and that they are fairly inexpensive, which might help it not to 'grow legs'.

I have a Benchmade 710 that I carry daily and would love to send him one of those, but would need to send him some diamond sharpeners as well.

I am very pleased I finally got around to buying one of these:
DMT® Double Sided Diafold® Diamond Whetstone™ Sharpener - Fine 600 / Coarse 325 Grits

If he's real good at sharpening, he may want something else to go with it, like fine ceramic stones, but this is a very effective all-in-one.

I personally have the larger version of DMT's diamond sharpener. One in coarse and one in fine. I also have a leather strop with compound for honing. For field work the small ones would be great.
