Help for the novice

Hi, I have a few questions...I am new to knife making and forums for that matter. I wanted to try my hand a knife making but until I educate myself a bit more I started with a damascus knife blade with no handles from ebay and made some "micarta" handles thinking I would just attach them. I didn't know that the steel would be so hard and I have been unable to drill through it with my dewalt. Also I have no idea exactly what bolts/fasteners to use. I saw several different designs on texasknife.com. So any suggestions? Also would rods with epoxy be a better choice? And what sort of buffer should I use to polish my handle once complete, and do I need to varnish or clear coat the handles?
