I am young and have been sharpening my little knife with a salvaged pocket stone for 5 years (since I was 8.) I can consistently put an edge that will pop hairs on it; is this easy to do, or have I developed a good amount of skill?
You're WAY ahead of the game, by my timeline anyway. I wish I'd just been allowed to have a knife at that age, much less have the skills to sharpen it properly.
As mentioned, stick with it. And keep learning as much as you can about it. It will serve you well.
you're doing good. i started messing around with knives about the same time and i would sharpne them for my friends at school. get some 3m wetordry sandpaper and a piece of glass to sharpen on. get some 120-280-320 and 400 grit and try that out instead of the pocket stone. wet the paper down and it will stick to the glass. make sure to get a piece at least 1/4" thick and about 3"x9" so you have plenty of length.
I use sandpaper on glass for flattening my benchstone (don't use it because its WAYout of whack, but i got it for free,) and for plane soles, but not knives yet. Thanks for the tip.
