I can never get the finished wrap to come out like one you would buy in a deli or somewhere. I'm a pretty accomplished cook but I find this minor detail puzzling.

Is there a certain trick or rule of thumb? Am I putting too much stuff in it? I would like to be able to fold these wraps for both sandwich meats/veggies and for Mexican burritos.

I dunno how easy it'll be in text, but I don't play with graphics progs...

1: standard wrap, pile about 3/4 of the way across in a 1.5-2" strip.
2: Pull one side over to the other, and pull / "roll" the food into a strip on the first 1/3 of the wrap
3: should have the food now covered by one side, with that side hitting around the middle and food out to about 1" from both sides
4: fold the corners in, and again
5: should now have 3 flat sides with a food pocket clostest to you
6: roll the rest of it

my sister worked in Taco Time for 2yrs, taught us how to do it quickly and neatly. Takes me about 5sec to roll after my food is piled on.

like an envelope.

If you've ever made your own envelopes, you know what I mean.

goodies slightly off center (toward you)
fold nearest "edge" away and over goodies
fold in each side
should have enough to roll forward twice

Another tip = heat up the tortilla in the microwave for 5-10 seconds. Have your stuff ready and do it quickly. As long as it's warm, it'll fold nice and tight.

Yet another tip = use honey after you have folded in the 2 sides....put it where you're about to fold forward. It'll act like glue.

Anything else?

Best way to learn is to start young and use fine warm tortillas just made by Grandma (that´s how I learned).

If you're just starting out, there are two things you should know: the torilla should be warm, and you're putting way too much in it. an 8inch tortilla will onlyy hold so much, like 1/4 or 1/3 lb-about 1/2 cup-3/4 cup of filling. just make many, many of them if you need to eat more.

Pre-packaged tortillas also warm quickly & nicely directly over a gas burner.
(low-medium flame) Use tongs. Really. Amazing the number of people that need to be told that.
Flour tortillas wrap nicely, corn tortillas do not.

Good advice all. I think I have been putting too much food in the middle of the wrap. I also never thought of warming the wrap first. Now I'm getting hungry.
