Help. HS vs D2 - Seduced by the "edged" side (long)

I live in a small town where none of these are available to fondle.

I purchased a pair of BM 551's (one for me and one for my son) and LOVE them. I've also owned a Endura (gave to son-in-law) and a CRKT KFF, which my oldest son now has. (OK my ex and I have 8 children- 4 boys, 3 girls + son in law.)

I swap the 551 with a BM 690 for "dress" use - razor edge AND good looking and a Delica for back-up in briefcase.

But I've been seduced by the edged (dark) side. I've read all of your recommendations on the BM710HS and now the 806 D2. I still like the 710 best, but do not have a problem w/ the hole vs stud. Do any of these come w/o the BT2? coating? I'm a lousy sharpener and even my 551 blade is scratched (OK more from use than sharpening, but still...)

Would a heavy (read bad) user like me be better off with the 154 CM? Does the 806 come in any "uncoated" versions?

Thanks...
:(

The steel used in the 710 is called M2, but the notation used is 710HS (for high-speed). :)

I have an 806. The coating is already coming off, after opening a few envelopes and boxes. I guess you should just live with the crappy coating, and get the blade polished/coated when you can't stand it anymore. That's my plan, at least.

Thanks!

I guess I just need to decide 710 in HS or 154CM. I've liked the 154 CM on my BM 690 so far...

Personally, I would get the HS, since if I got the 154CM, I would have that feeling of not having gotten the best steel available. I'd probably end up upgrading in the end. :)

Thanks. That's usually how I end up. That's what I'm going to order right now.

I just did the same w/ a fixed blade. I just decided not to buy one at all until I could afford the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. Otherwise I just "work my way up" and end up not using or giving away... Or they end up in a box in the truck I open every 3-4 months.

Thanks again.

I got my first M2 steel just over a month ago...a BM910.

It was a little tricky putting on a better-than-factory edge (IMO BM didn't do a good job), but now that I've gotten it wicked sharp it sure holds an edge well! Now to see how long it goes before it needs to go back to the benchstone...a few zips with the steel have sufficed for now. My current EDC knife.

I was a "steel newbie"until I discovered this site, which sure has helped in raising my par! I was relieved to discover that my old EDC's lack of holding an edge wasn't just me! (an EZ-Out) Got a Mossoud Ayoob last month, am considering aquiring a Camilus Arclight in D2 or a CRKT M18 now.

Such fun new toys! :D
