Hello Fellow Makers:

I need a little help.

I was chatting with someone & they talk about using 420J2 as a blade steel & 420J1 on the liners. For 420J2 they can get a rockwell of 58 or better, which is great. This is for a small folder (single & multi-blades).

I was just wondering how good this steel is, I have never heard of it, nor do I see any of the knifemaking suppliers carrying it.

I just wanted to make sure it was a deseriable steel to use for knifemaking purposes.

Thanks in advance.

Ric

420J2 is that horrible steel used in those $50 display swords found on those home shopping networks for way more than they are worth. It is the low point for low grade steel. Good thing you can't find any to use, trust me. You'd get better results out of Aluminum.

Wow, thanks for the heads up on the 420J2. I will definately be using something better than that. I am most probably go with 440C, maybe ATS-34 though...not sure yet....

Thanks for the tips!

Ric
