i had been "sharpening" my bm 730bt with a crock stick, and it worked pretty well, i had been able to get it to shave my arm and leg hair fairly easily, but never popping sharp.
i then try wrapping sandpaper around a block of solidsurfacing, to use as a sharpening stone.
i dulled it out, and can't get it very sharp now :(

i know i can send it back to bm, and they'll sharpen it (right? i didn't void the warentee i hope...), but i was wondering if any of the experts here on bf would be able to put a scary-sharp edge on it for a very small(read shipping and a big mac) fee? it's my only real knife, and i'd like to see how sharp i can get it. from what i've heard, bm knives come from the factory sharp, but not as sharp as they could be.
i hope i didn't do any damge, but it's possible..

please refrain from telling me how stupid i am...

The sandpaper was probably so agressive it created rough spots too big for the crock stick to take out. Either find a cutlery store that will sharpen your knife, or send it back.

I'm sure you havent voided your warranty and Benchmade would be more than happy to sharpen it for you.

If you really like the 730 design, I would highly recommend that you get a 733 with S30V steel. I guarantee that it will come from the factory with a scary sharp blade.

You'll thank me later :)

I'll assume that you're using some kind of crock stick holder setup like the Sharpmaker. You might have increased the edge angle with the sharpening block, so now your crock sticks aren't hitting the edge. Mark the edge with a Sharpie and figure out what's going on.

Also, Stephen Roos might be right about the rough spots. In this case, you can try using progressively finer grits of sandpaper. Go slow, make sure you've got the right angle. Try not to oversharpen on the coarse grits as you'll just be making a nasty rough burr on the other side.

Hey, Roth, what grit sandpaper were you using, and howcome you went to the sandpaper after the crock stick? If getting a scary sharp edge was part of my resume, then I'd help you out. But since there's only a 50/50 chance of me making it better, I think you'll be much better off with someone else. You definitely didn't void the warranty just by trying to sharpen it and it may be worthwhile to send back to Benchmade just to recover the factory edge.

it was a 600grit, which is pretty rough.
i wasn't getting the kind of edge i wanted with the crock stick, so i figured i'd go to the paper, then back to the stick.

i thought about sending it back to benchmade, but hoped that one of the legendary sharpeners might be willing to sharpen it better than bm.

i'd love to get the 733, but i really can't afford any more knives (or food) right now :(

I just remembered that Ben Dale at EdgePro (click on Prices & Special Offers) has a free sharpening demo; you send your knife in, and he sharpens it on an EdgePro system. You might want to try it out. I've heard only good things about Ben and the EdgePro.

Definitely let Ben have a go at it if you want to see how sharp it can get, an Edge Pro will take it far and away beyond factory sharpness. Just so you know, once you've seen what one of those can do you may not be able to resist getting one! I couldn't. :)

thanks, i think i will!

playing around with it a little more (i promised myself i'd sharpen it with my tongue if that's what it took. luckily, it didn't!) i used the crock stick, and looked at the edge with an acrylic ball (used as an optic for flashlights to culminate the light into a penciltight beam) i saw that it did have a bur, and a couple more passes with the crock stick, i was able to get it as sharp (sharper??) than it's ever been :D

it didn't pass some of the tests i've read about before though, and i'll probably mail it out on monday.

i wonder how long they'll have it...it's my only knife  :( :( :(
(well, i carry a cheapo penknife and a cheapo multitool, but we all know that's not the same)

Ben had mine for about a week. Congrats on getting your BM sharp, it's a great feeling isn't it?

Hmmm--I may have to try that. I'd considered getting an EdgePro in the past but I still have no concept of how sharp my knife is compared to what other people consider sharp. Maybe I'll give it a go.

Roth ....... stay away from sharp pointy things. You'll just wind up hurting yourself or someone else.

Stick with your flashlights, just don't shine them directly into your eyes when you turn it on.

thanks for helping me feel better ren... :p

yam, i'm talented, i can hurt myself on anything.
if it isn't knives, it will be pillows or underwear.

If I end up using sandpaper I start my edge with 600, then progress upwards. I finish at around 2000 grit. But...maybe you should send it back to BM just to be safe.

Get a hi-speed grinder...That'll fix it up really well
In fact, there's a guy at the Ft Worth gun & knife shows that could take your 730 and turn it into a Benchmite, if you can give about 10 minutes! I've seen him work, and boy, do the sparks fly! geegee

Second the grinder. I have a cheap 60.00 delta 1x32 belt grinder.
I can make any knife shave hair in less than a minute with that puppy:D and a ceramic rod.

Even a 6.00 flea market special with no heat treat:D

I'll second the sending it to Ben Dale. He got my small model 2 Obenauf S30V framelock killer sharp. I ended up getting the Apex model with the stone upgrade. It suits my purposes well.

Hey, I was being facetious about the grinder. I'm not kidding though about the guy at the gun shows. He leans so hard on some knives, I'm surprised most don't end up the size of toothpicks. I don't mond taking some "weekend beaters" to him (because the time I'd have to spend sharpening wouldn't be justified on an older beater), but I don't think that's what you're after here. geegee
