Well, I'm getting another Dale Reif knife, and I need some opinions. I am shooting for something like THIS!!! But, I want something that I could use as a daily carry.

What should I use for the bolsters?

- Mokume

- Damascus

- Mosaic damascus

- Heat colored mosaic damascus

- Ti. / anodized Ti.

- Scale material. (ie. carbon fiber, micarta)

What should I use for the scales?

- Carbon fiber

- White ivory micarta

- Other?

What should I use for blade steel?

- CPM420V

- CPM440V

- BG-42

- Damascus

- Stainless damascus

What grit for satin finish?

- I want a nice satin finish such as Spyderco's or Benchmades. What's that like? 600? 800?

What should I do about the thumbstuds?

- Dual

- Single

- Jewel Inlay? What jewel?

What kind of clip?

I'd VERY much appreciate any, and all opinions on the individual materials I have suggested, and any materials you may suggest.

Thanks a million guys!!!

AR,
Your link does not seem to send me to a specific knife. I love Dale's work (I've got one coming in about two weeks, fingers crossed) but without knowing which specific knife it is hard to make suggestions.

It's the one pictured there in the center of the screen. The "gallery04." With ivory micarta scales, mosaic damascus bolsters...

What James Said (i.e. just me too).

On a daily carry I would steer away from Mokeme. Mosiaic bolsters are too cool, but I would be very consious of not getting them scratched up. (dedicated pocket or use a pouch or sheath of some type).

I will offer you my input as I have had quite a little practice lately as a day does not pass that I don't run scale/bolster/blade combo's through my head. Since I don't know your budget I will actually offer 2 opinions;

basic user with a touch of style - 420V blade, stainless raindrop damascus bolsters, carbon fiber scales, dual thumbs, liners and clip anodized to your liking

sell the farm user - Mike Norris stainless ladder damascus (with 420V core) blade, Eggerling mosaic damascus bolsters (Windmill or Crossroads patterns are really nice), mastodon ivory scales, gold/brown anodized Ti liners (jeweled of course) and clip, fileworked damascus back spacer and dual thumbs

Since it's not my dollar Jackyl I gotta vote for the second one

. But with the price tag on that one, it just might become known as the "Great Reif Barrier"!

Thanks for the input guys...Actually the 2nd. option is what we are planning on, but I have been leaning toward 420V blade, Eggerling mosaic bolsters, and just plain ol' handle spacers rather than a true back spacer. What do you think about this? Is a true back spacer a must on a fancier knife like we're talking about?

Do I want stainless damascus bolsters? Sorry, I have no experience with any types of damascus.

What about stainless damascus blade, bolsters, backstrap and liners, file worked blade, backstrap and liners, elephant ivory scales with one gold thumb stud with ruby inlay and rubies inlayed down backstrap.

From what I have seen and been told, stainless Damascus is typically "shinier" than regular Damascus (with Devin Thomas' being "shinier" than Mike Norris'). IMHO simply a matter of preferance on looks. One thing to consider is the type of use the knife will get. Moisture will have a way of getting between the liner and bolster and inside the pivot also. This could lead to problems with the regular Damascus if your not careful. Just some things to consider.
