I found this forum and bought some knives and they are great fun to look at and play with. But I never have anything to cut. I can't have a knife at work, not that my job requires cutting anything anyway. I kept thinking something would come up at home, but aside from once opening a package with a 5 inch blade, nothing has. I tried EDCing a knife, and, not being inclined to vandalism, I never once found anything legit to cut with it.

I want to use these things. What do you guys cut?

Go to the supermarket and tell them you are moving and ask if they have any boxes. Then cut them up!

No need to waste boxes some one else may need. Just get on a charity mailing list for people or animals. You will get plenty of letters to open and paper to cut.

sounds like you need to start doing more stuff that could use a knife!

I use mine probably 2-3 times everyday, cutting zip ties, pastic crap, tape, tubes, ropes, string, etc... then the fixed blades come out if I am working outside or going camping/fishing..

Get into the great outdoors! Go on a hike, and then you can start bushcrafting.

I use mine daily. I can't understand how anyone can't find something to use it for. Others that I got interested in carying a knife have told me that they don't know how they did without one in their pocket for all these years. That's just me. Even if I have to shave arm hair to check if its still sharp enough I use it. :p
Opening letters
Cutting threads on clothing
Cutting twine/cord/rope
Coupons
Tie wraps
Plastic on packages
Tags on clothes
Food etc.
The list can go on and on.

i have the same problem. it seems most things that people use their knife for can be easily done with my hands, not to mention much faster aswell.
i wish i had more things that 'needed' to be cut

I'm in the same boat. i don't "need" a knife to do a lot of the tasks i use it for but it's easier to carry a knife than to struggle with trying to rip packages open.

My most useful knife is the Spyderco Cricket I purchased 6 years ago. I use it as a money clip and mostly cut open letters with it on a daily basis. Its not the biggest, but its been in my pocket for that many years and it has been used the most.
For bigger knives, I would just go out and buy some wood from a hardware store and whenever you get that itch to cut something, work on a board. I usually do that with my 3 inch folder on a branch with my Spyderco Pro grip.

The knife I use the most has a curved jaw cuticle nipper (flush cutter). I use it to remove hangnails and skin tags. When you tug at the aforementioned items with your teeth, the skin rips down to the bone. Before I got a pocketable nipper, my finger tips looked like the dog had been chewing on them. A good "cut" fingernail file also is very useful. Many of my larger knife activities center around food preparation and opening things like blister packs. I wish Victorinox would offer a cuticle nipper on one of their many models.

Bushcraft. Hell, backyard bushcraft. Carve fuzz sticks, split branches, build an entire shelter in the forest. Just get out of there before you're reported for "being a bum" or something. I don't know the exact misdemeanor one would earn for camping in places you aren't allowed to.

In the course of a normal day, I end up using my pocket knife a couple to several times a day. Cutting open a new bag of dog kibble, opening my mail, sometimes a UPS package, those plastic blister packages that defy senior citizen fingers. In summer we have tomato plants, so jute twine and small diameter stakes get cut and sharpened. Breaking down a box for trash is something I do often.

Theres a lot that can be done by hand if you're young and strong, but I've found that with age and some arthritis problems, I can't just rip things apart anymore; it hurts too much. So I use a small sharp pen knife to slice or cut what I can't do by hand. Sometimes having a sharp tool on hand just makes life a little easier.

It's a fact of modern life that we don't really need much of a knife these days, but we're aflicted with the knife knut disease, so we look for reasons to carry. I know a lot of people who don't need more than a Victorinox classic to get through thier day. Go ahead and carry what you want, and if need comes up, then you'll have a knife on you. My old scout master said you can never tell what's gong to happen when you walk out the door in the morning, so be prepared. Maybe having a sharp cutting tool will be needed that day, maybe not. I'm 69 years old, but only one time in my life I really did need a knife in a situation where it may have made a difference between life and death. I had a pocket knife and the situation got a chance to have a good ending. It didn't have to be big, just sharp.

Don't worry about it, just carry it. Who knows what may happen before the sun goes down.

I have a job that requires cutting numerous things and it takes a serious toll on my knives. Careful what you wish for i say.

Your employer should either reimburse you for your work knives or buy them for you. if they don't you can take them as a tax deduction.
