Hello all,I don't exactly make knives,but I do re-store badly beaten
knives that were something special in their day......

I was asking around about keeping blades tight, but not too tight.....Someone
posted a picture of this device to loosen tight blades,or loosen pins to remove,
or dissassemble a knife....

here is tool...I'd like to have one made,or knowledge of where to find one?(if I can afford it)

Thanks all,JD

It's called a "Liner Spreader". Great Lakes Waterjet made some back in 2008, but I'm not sure if they are even around anymore. I Googled the term, but I didn't come up with anything.

Thanks Chris.....Most info i've gotten so far.....If you happen onto any, please let me know...I'll
keep looking...I know what to call it now,jd

That is a beautifully made tool, but it's 4 pieces of steel and 4 tapped holes. If you have access to a drill press and a grinder of some sort it would not take long to make a serviceable imitation.

You could start with a pair of box joint pliers and heavily modify them by grinding away most of the jaws and drilling and tapping the handles for a spreading screw.

There are a few plier-based options out there, "expanding pliers" or "ring opening pliers" might be able to be ground down to fit the slots in the knives you are working with

There's a dental tool called a "crown spreading plier" that has jaws almost exactly like the business end of the "liner spreader", but it's priced so only dentists can afford one.

Mahoney,I been trying to wrap my brain around an idea....But I think you've got me to thinking in whole new light...
Yep,that plier spreading idea sounds like it might work...I actually have a set of vise grips with jaws modified for automobile
I had done some work on....Never even gave it a thought till now....
Thanks for the idea,I'll let you know if it works....If not,I think you gave me some good places to start....
Thanks for your help my friend,
JD
