So today I am just hanging out at the sailing club where I am a member, and took a nice walk around the grounds. Beautiful day, 68 degrees, 10 knots of breeze, just a few clouds and a cold beer in my hand. As I walk around I can't help but think of knives or knife projects! Walked down one of the docks to check out a friends boat that was hit during the last race when the images of mangled fiberglass and stainless steel immediatly turned to handle materials!

I quickly turned around before I started ripping the damaged section of deck off when I almost run into the wheelbarrow used for loading your boat. I grab it to move it out of the way when I notice this...

A little over half of the handle had this beautiful grain! Boy I sure can't wait till it breaks, or should I just go buy a cheap replacement? I know its weathered, but I just thought it might be good for...

Ok, so I walk away from that. Head towards the maintenance shop to BS with the guys on lunch when out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimps of some new furniture dollies they bought. I went over to check them out to see if I could use them to work on the deck of one of my trailers when I spot this...

Geeze, I couldn't believe the spalting in that wood! I asked the guys where they got them, they told me Home Depot and the two they bought had least amount of spalting! They said they were only $20, hmmm, should I go buy them? Remove and replace the spalted wood and return them? My mind is about to explode!

Stacy's thread about salvaged stuff for the shop kinda got me thinking about looking all places for stuff, and I know found steel is generally not a good idea, but does anyone else ever see stuff for their knife making like this? Am I going crazy? Am I thinking about knives too much, my wife thinks so sometimes.

I'm right there with you. I'm waiting for this oak that I drive by every morning to fall. It has about a 2' round burl at the base.

Yea, you're probably already crazy and yea, you probably think too much about knives, but that's only when compared to dull, boring people with no passion. In the context of this forum it's expected, understood, and better yet, encouraged.

Good job! Keep it up! Did those guys happen to mention exactly WHICH Home Depot they got those at? ;-)

Well, the Home Depot is only about 2 miles away from the club so I assume it is that one. I don't think they would have driven 30min across town to the other Home Depot, especially since the maintenance guy is married to the harbor master!

A long,long time ago, in a far,far away gallaxy......:rolleyes::D

I use to take my mothers brass candle stick holders that she had stored away and cut them up for knife guards.
And any thing else I could find........:)

But now I just order any material I need on line, wow how times have changed......:rolleyes::)

That's as bad as me burning the bottom out of my parent BBQ trying to use it as a forger when I was about 12.
