Help!!! I took my ADV Butcher apart and now I'm screwed!

Hello all,

I'm an idiot. Now that we have that out of the way, I need to ask for help. I took my ADV Butcher apart yesterday and was able to get it back together without a problem. I did it again today (intended to be the last time) and now there is tremendous blade play when I put it back together. The bearings are both in where they are supposed to be, though they both came out - they look the same on both sides, but are they directional in some way? I don't know if I got them on the same sides in the right direction if that matters at all.

The two pivot screws seem to run out of threads before creating enough force on the scales to center and hold the blade firmly. Yesterday this wasn't an issue, so I am looking for guidance as to what I might be doing wrong.

I was thinking that there might have been a washer that I didn't see or something, but I have searched all over and haven't seen anything and I don't recall seeing one during either disassembly.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!!

I had the exact same problem with the 2014 model never an issue with my proto I had to send it in for a rebuild and I'm still waiting on it.

That is really weird right? Did you ever get any idea what happened? Do you think there is a certain way the bearings go or a washer that fell out?

Can you post a picture of the parts laid out? Short of losing a part, there should not be any reason you can not get it back together just as it was. Bearings like these can't really have a direction they need to be installed, since it is just the balls that are touching. One set could be different than another though. Do they look the same? Do you see marks on the liners and blade where the bearings make contact? If so, that would rule out a washer missing between the bearings.

Seems silly but did you accidentally cross thread the pivot screw?

A picture of the parts laid out would be helpful.
I'm not familiar with the knife, but if possible, try tightening one pivot screw all the way before replacing the pivot barrel.
Could be that there are washers missing too.

Also, systematically try every combination of bearing arrangement. Probably won't make a difference but it can't hurt anything.

You're not an idiot. Something like this has happened to all of us, except those too timid to try to fix anything.

So, I figured it out. The male screw has zero wiggle room meaning that if the screws wear even a little there isn't enough compression on the scales. I took 300 grit sandpaper to the male screw a little at a time till I took enough off to compress the scales and solve my problem. Basically, the male screw is a little too long from ADV.

Thanks all for trying to help me!!!
