Picked these up at the Canton, TX First Monday Trade Days this past week and can't seem to ID the hatchet, other than it looks old. Any ideas on this? Markings are "M" over "1 1/4". Got it for $10, and the Kelly Works Woodslasher for $20 from the same vendor.

Also picked up a really rusted "USA" marked True Temper Flint Edge for $5 that I have since de-rusted. Any ideas what/why it is USA marked? Couldn't find anything about that on the Yesteryears Tools site.

Oh the infamous "M"...an ongoing discussion of its background...nice heads though! I almost went this past Canton wkend. Do you frequently find decent items or?? Any still on original hafts?

Well, that was my first post on here, so I didn't know the "M" was an ongoing mystery. LOL. The hatchet was on what I think was an original handle, but it was extremely loose. The other two were bare heads.

I've been refurbing a couple of double bits of my grandfathers (True Temper & Craftsman), and I have been wanting to get a nice older singlebit to restore. Happened upon the True Temper first, then the other two later. This was actually my first time to go to Canton, but I've heard about it my whole life, so I was keeping my eyes open for older tools.

yep, a mystery.
i have one i think with the infamou M1/4
i have seen several others over the years.

USA Markings are for U.S Army I believe. Older True Temper/Kelly Works are amazing axes for sure, those M marked axes are a bit of an anomaly found on many brands.

So, in regards to the M markings, can someone direct me to some of threads that discuss them? I've done some searching, but can't seem to find anything.
