I generally don't commit to an axe without knowing what I'm getting, but here I am. An interesting Jersey/Kentucky. Weighs 3.64 lbs, doesn't look like it's been use on the edge side, some slight poll mushrooming. Here is what interests me:

  • At near 4 pounds, it is really thin 3-4" up the blade. When looking from the eye view, you can see that there is no curves- it's like a Maine wedge.
  • The only mark is the number 8 stamped on the poll. Not sure I've seen that before.
  • It comes from northern New England. It was packaged by someone selling lightly used axes, including a couple of Rixfords- it was keeping company with some quality axes.

Anyone recognize the "8" stamp on the poll? Sorry for the crappy pics.

Thanks!

My money is on it being an Emerson Stevens. I bet you'll find a W or a P in front of the eye.
I have two E&S where there's only a #8. Quite sure it was part of the year stamp the 8 was just struck deeper so it lasts.
I also recognize that little bit of original finish that's on the top of the axe. Cool find man!

Thanks Josh! That would be wayy better than I could have hoped for. Here are a few more pictures. I could see a three in from of the 8, and a "P" on the other side of the eye, but I didn't want to fool myself into thinking I had something more special than I do.

You wouldn't happen to have pics of yours, would you?

You got it! An E&S! 1938 tempered by Pearly Pulsiver! It's ironic but one of mine that only has an 8 is also a Jersey pattern. Haha. I swear I could pick out an Emerson from a mile away. Great score man!
I'm at work but I'll grab some pics later. Unless I forget, which is entirely possible! :D. But I'll try to remember. Congrats!

Just a few more pictures of the of the edge and how thin and straight the cheeks stay all the way to the lugs. The blade looks like it's been used lightly at best, and never sharpened. Time and a bit of mushrooming appear to be the only issues. I'm pretty happy.

I got a sweet little 3 pound Rixford from the same individual with the same characteristics, time and a bit of mushrooming appearing to be the only issues.
