Was meandering through the depths of my safe tonight, and found an old balinsong-style knife that I think I came into possession of in college (over 15 years ago)!

Anyway, its marked "(c) 1985 Pacific Cutlery", has the butterfly "Balisong" logo on it, with the word "International Series" below. It's also marked "JAPAN" on one side. Don't think its worth much, but if anyone can give me a little info on it, I'd be much obliged.

Oh, and how do you properly tighten up the little catch that holds the two sides together?

TIA

What kind of handles are they? Stainless steel, wood, or die-cast with black plastic inserts. I have a 1985 International Series with the black plastic inserts. The knife may not be worth much, but overall, it is a very decent Balisong. Pacific Cutlery owned this trademark, Butterfly logo and everything, before Benchmade bought them. I love mine, the spine is so damn thick. It's a very rugged and well made knife. Mine is as tight as the day I bought it.
The one I have is, I believe, model #139.

komondor-

It's got black die-cast handles. And a stainless-looking tanto-style blade about 4 to 4.5", with a spine about 4.5mm-5mm. Thanks for the info.

As far as I know, the steel is 440. It is probably 440A, rather than the better 440C.

Tanto style...hmmmmm I'm not sure what model # that might be.

It's a good knife, though. Enjoy.

You've got a fairly rare Pacific Cutlery model that was made in Japan in the mid '80's. The blades, unfortunately, will almost always outlast the handles. The Zinc based metal used for the handles was too soft for extended manipulation and the tang pin wore out, i.e., beat to death, the 'cups' machined into the back of the handles. I know of no way to remedy the loose latch without re-handling. There are a couple of folks that could do this for you in the $100 range. The blade is hell for stout, hand-ground, and would be very happy to reside in a new set of nice, stainless, handles! ;) It should be something similar to this knife with the different handles..........

Wow! That knife sure is "perdy" with stainless steel handles! And yes, that is the exact same blade profile that I have...

Can you tell me who some of the folks are that could make me new handles?
