Hello all I have a Schrade Walden N.Y. U.S.A. on the main blade tang. 80T on the other side. It has a funny looking nail hole on the main blade, I have heard it was called a French nail hole from someone That might not know a thing about knives. The hole looks like ^^^^^^^^^ but upside down. does any one have any info on this knife. Should I use the knife or is a collectable? It has been used and had a little discolor to the blades. Any help will be greatly appreciated. John

The popular 8OT Old Timer stockman, over 30 years old because it has the "Scharde Walden" stamp, that nail nick is also called a Match Striker. I´ll let the experts give you more details.

Does it look like this?

If so, it's an 8OT.

Thanks for the fast replies. Yes it is the stockman 80T with the funny looking nail pull. Is this knife any more special then the ones I could buy new? I just bought it and a small hammer brand pocket knife for $5.00 The OLD TIMER was going to be a carry knife but if it is rare I will not carry.

The Schrade-Walden tang stamp indicates that your knife was made before 1973.

As far as collecting or using, and value... that's a tough question. Since Schrade went out of business the eBay prices for Old Timer knives has skyrocketed. Unfortunately the 8OT was one of the models available at a huge closeout discount from Smoky Mountain Knife Works and there are many of them available. But the older tang stamp does make the knife more collectible that the "Schrade" Old Timers, and more valuable.

You can do a Completed Items search on eBay to see what other 8OT knives have sold for, and you'll probably see some with the older stamps. I have been watching OldTimer prices on eBay lately; I'm really just guessing, but I'd say an unused 8OT with the Walden tang stamp would be worth around $50.

To use or not to use... Many people carry knives for everyday use that cost much more than your's. So it's more a matter of "replacability" not cost. You will be able to find a replacement 8OT easily, probably any time you want one. But finding one with your specific tang stamp is going to be more difficult.

Personally, here's what I'd do. If the knife has any sentimental value, I'd stash it away for safekeeping. If the knife is in new condition I'd add it to my collection. If the knife is already used and/or in poor condition, I'd keep using it.

Best Wishes,
Bob

You've gotten all good comments and advice, John. I'll just add that the staining on the blade is called 'patina' ... Carbon steel blades (preferred by many collectors and afficionados) get like that. Don't try and clean them up so they shine, the patina will protect the blades somewhat from rust. And it holds the history of the knife as well.

Ya got a bargain. Enjoy the knife. And welcome to our forum.

Phil
