I originally posted this in the Traditionals, then went looking for a Kabar subforum... duhh...

A recent acquisition, a wonderful old Kabar sheath knife. I've seen references to Royal Trading Post knives, is this one? The blade measures 4 3/8" long, the knife is 8 1/2" overall. The tang is stamped KA-BAR / PAT 70342 - AUG 31, 19something something, UNION CUT. CO. / OLEAN , N.Y. The pommel is attached with a barrel nut, the scales are clamshells of some kind of plastic, wrapped with three bands. Other than the reflection of the mythical hirsute cryptozoo in the blade, this thing is in remarkable condition.

What do I have?

Your sweet looking knife is not a Royal Trading Post although that is a Royal Trading Post sheath. Many older hunting knives will be found in sheaths they did not leave the factory in. Your knife is a model A82 and appears to be a late 1930s knife in very nice condition. Royal Trading Post used a model 72 blade with a fancy stacked celluloid washer handle in black, white, and aluminum. Royal Trading Posts were also etched with that name out on the mark side of the blade and when in fine condition the etch will be easily read.

Oh, that's great! I appreciate the information.
