I have a knife that's 13 inches long with no grip material on it. As you can see it's heavily rusted a nd pitted. There are no marks, stamps or engravings on it. I was wondering if anyone might know what it is based on the design. I couldn't find a knife design that has a wide handle like this. As for the material I'm not entirely sure. I struck it and it makes a dull trunk almost hollow sounding. Any ideas would be a great help, I plan to restore it. Thanks.

I'm not a knife expert but it puts me in mind of a letter opener.

It looks too long to be a letter opener to me.

I'm thinking it may have been a coup de grace knife which was used to kill animals.
If I'm not mistaken they were commonly known as pig stickers and used on farms to kill pigs.
