Help Identify a Pukko for me

I have had this pukko for 10 or 15 years. It was given to me by a good friend that shares my love of knives. It takes and holds an edge well and has a great handle shape. Fit and finish is flawless. All the talk of pukkos lately had me pull this lil doll out and start using it as it was intended, instead of hanging in the rack unused.
It is 8 1/2" long, with a 4" blade. The lower area of the sheath is lined with some, either plastic or metal to stiffen the sheath in the blade section. I know nothing of the maker and thought I would ask you guys more in the know on these blades. Here are a few shots of it. It seems a good knife to me, but I have never heard of the brand/maker so it got me to wondering .

I wish I had a clue Rick! But I do like it:thumbup: Nice clean lines, simple in an almost Japanese sense IMO.

Judging by the pictures it looks real similar to my Helle Fabrikker. Wow..neato.

I'll tell you what little I know..

Hackman was pretty popular for the plastic handled Puukko bladed butterfly knives they made called the "CIA knife", like this one here:
http://www.ragweedforge.com/9692.jpg

These are made by Sorsakoski which iirc, after recent investigation, turned out to be the old "hackman" manufacturer.

The current Sorsakoski flutterby knife is listed in Ragnars under "Ahti Knives"

http://www.ragweedforge.com/AhtiCatalog.html

Basically it appears that the maker is still going strong, and making some really nice, quality stuff.

If I'm incorrect on any minor details, or even completely full of manure I'm sure one of the other guys will be along to correct the information.

Nice knife though!

Hi Rob, Good to hear from you!:)
Thanks for the info RWS. It is a real solid knife. The handle is a real tight grained, blackish wood. Ebony, maybe?

"Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art who gained international recognition in the years following the Second World War. This was due to his broad aesthetic scope and his refined exhibition designs. Conflicting aspects combined in Tapio Wirkkala's life and art. He was equally at home in metropolitans abroad as in the wilds of Lapland, where he sought inspiration and impulses for his advanced design rooted solidly in the most genuine aspects of the finnish experience."

The Hackman brand knife you have is the only knife design he ever did, although the knife that RWS mentioned is very similar in overall "feel". I have one just like his on my side as I type.

The Hackman knife came in 2 lengths I have heard. The handle is micarta or similar. They are highly sought after and sell on Ebay for way over $100. You can get more info by searching the Scandinavian Forum at Knifeforums.

It's a very nice knife!

I've still got mine. I bought it from a Brookstone catalog years ago, for about $30 or $35.

The bolster and buttcap are brass and the handle is nylon. The sheath is lined with plastic to keep the very pointy blade from cutting through the leather.

I never read about any but the one size, but I did come across a mention of a kydex or similar sheath for some of the later knives.

Edit: Cold Steel just came out with their tribute to the Hackman puukko, which they call the Sisu, which I understand is Finnish for steadfastness, determination, or just plain guts. Lynn Thompson loves this stuff. His wife is Finn. The Sisu has one of their San Mai blades, so it's selling for something like $300. Maybe at half that price, I could persuade myself to buy one.

The design is outstanding. Beautiful knife. My first really good knife, even if the steel isn't all that and the price was much too reasonable for a really good knife. :D

Hi ArchAngel:

Your pukko looks like a good strong EDC type. I noticed it had a full length peened over tang which is strong. Stainless is hard to peen over. I've tried.

Thanks for sharing.

That is a beautiful lil knife ArchAngel. Thanks for sharing it. I like the sheath as well.

Nice puukko  I like 'em solid, simple, and unfussy. An old file, some scrap brass, and a long hoarded piece of African blackwood yielded this one that I gave to a friend of mine's 13 year old son. Hope the boy don't cut his thumb with it too often, or he'll wind up being called "Thumbcutter Waiting on a Beard". :D ;)

That one is beautiful too Sarge. Keep em coming.

I've seen them as simple as the above beautiful tools and fitted and finished in the $1,000 range. Once in a great while I will see one that is ugly, but those instances are rare as hens teeth. They are the most functional and beautiful knives ever!

Thanks for all of the help guys. This Tapio Wirkkala had in interesting background. It is interesting reading. Kind of cool to find out that it is highly sought after knife. Although that makes me want to baby it now.:o
That is a nice knife you made Sarge. You do great work!
Again, thanks for all the info and friendly help.

I knew someone would come along an' letcha know if I was completely full of it!:foot: :D :o

That is seriously a good lookin' knife.

Of course every time Sarge posts pics of that one, I drool. I love how cleanly he ground that blade.

Overall, I agree with Sutcliffe perzactly.

I never knew there was a Scandinavian knife forum- I've been trying to pick up everything I can here and at Ragnars site. Eric Bergstrom has some neat stuff too. Not much love for the Puukko at BF overall it seems though.:(

(I can darn skippy tell ya' there aint much love for Helle knives!!):D

Real nice work, Sarge. Is black african wood hard to work like ebony? You know, oily and will crack if overheated on the grinder.

Couldn't say about the grinder Steve, I like to use as few power tools as absolutely possible, so I carve my handles to shape and hand sand. The blackwood is very similar to the ebony when I carve it, but I hate sanding that stuff, it's like rolling around in coal dust. I've got a small hunk of pink ivory laying around here someplace. Fascinating wood, starts out salmon pink and darkens a bit with age/wear. Made a small bodice dagger for a lady with a handle of pink ivory, and she was convinced I had dyed the handle pink just for her. Really cool wood, it carves and works very similar to boxwood, other than being pink, and I understand it only grows in a certain area of Africa, leaving it's harvesting and exportation entirely under control of the Zulu tribe.
I'll have to dig the small piece I've got up and fit it to a blade.

You an' me both! My enthusiasm FAR outweighs my knowledge it seems:D :o Ferguson had mentioned the forum in his reply, up above.

"You can get more info by searching the Scandinavian Forum at Knifeforums."

I'm currently busier 'n a one legged man in an a$$ kickin' contest with the new job an' all, so it'll be a month or so until I get a chance to check it out myself....

 g'night friends, gotta sleep fast.....

Wandering around BF, I did a search for puukko, and I found myself at a Kukri Forum!

I have both sizes of the Hackman puukko and one of the "butterfly" models - all bought at the same pawnshop in Columbus, Ohio, years ago. The edges on the puukkos are mighty thin. I've been careful with them.

They also had one of those monster "survival" knives by Hackman, and I guess I should have bought it too now that I see what they sell for on eBay.

Why are puukkos not popular at BF? They are fine knives for cutting.

Hi BBB:

Puukkos are very popular on this site. I love em, too.

I think you will find that this site leans toward kukris, as well as many other enjoyable topics.
