Good Morning

I have a brades 19'5 billhook or kinderling chopper, trying to identify the posible age and what exactly it is. looks like the end might have been cut off at some time in its life. it weighs 1lb 4oz if that is any help? any point in the right direction would be most appreciated.

Thank you. do you think it would matter that the stamp is in a different place and doesnt say 181 rather possibly the year or length? could this just be as its from a different year than the catalog?

Yes, I would assume the change in markings is due to the year of manufacture. Marketers always want something to look fresh.

Hi there
The 195 is a pattern number used by William Hunt (Brades) for a Rodding pattern billhook. The website; A Load of Old Billhooks.co.uk has copies of catalogues from 1878 and 1922 in the English section, with this pattern in. The form of the lettering looks more twentieth century than nineteenth century.
They were produced through both world wars with a military broad arrow mark for use by engineers, artillery and in vehicle tool kits, they are very good for clearing scrub vegetation or cutting foliage for camouflage.
The blade look to have been cut, as a break across the widest part of the blade seems unlikely.
Hope this helps
Cheers Andy
