Ok guys, first off I mostly browse this area but some of you have a great knowledge of axe's and such, so maybe someone here can help me out. I know this is going to be a long shot as all I have to go off of is shape. The axe belonged to my wife's great grandfather, who passed away sometime in the 60's and she doesn't know much of anything about him. She won't let me clean it up to try and preserve it, and I have done chalk rubbings looking for any kind of stamp. Nothing I can make out. Lots of deep pits, the edes are pretty abused. I would love to bring it back to working condition and stop the rusting, but it's not mine like I said.

Anyways, here are the pics...

I can take more pictures if needed but again I don't have permission to alter its current, decrepid state because she "likes how it looks." Ugh, if she only understood...

Thanx for any info you can offer. I'll try and find out anymore info I can about the man who owned it to offer clues if it'll help.

lots of axes aren't marked, but one this pitted could easily be hiding the mark. no way to know without cleaning it up. you might remind her that the axe did not look like this when gramps used it, but you can make it look that way.

Thanx for the reply. I did not realise marking was so hit-or-miss with axe's. I actually spoke with her about it today and got her to realise that all the rust is active and slowly destroying what's left. She said she thought I was going to make it "all shiney and new looking." I assured her that was not the case, but I did want to remove all the rust and stop anymore from forming. Hell, almost anything will make this thing look better.

So tomorrow I will start the process of resurection for this piece. If I see anything that looks like a stamping I will be sure to take rubbings and photos for id.

More to come....
