I picked up some wood that was said to be madrone. Not being the most educated wood working guy was looking for some help to verify the truth of this or correct the sellers and my assumption. Thanks

These pics show a piece of the slab I cut off, some of the pieces cut up and finally a couple of pieces Ive home stabilized just taken out of solution. They still need to dry and will lighten back up but it helps to show the grain I think.

If it's Madrone, it looks like it's spalted. Looks very nice, whatever it is. In fact, send me that piece on the far right in the last pic! :)

Haha yeah some of it is really cool looking. Planning on using that piece for my knife blade I am getting from Gene Martin. I got this larger piece along with some maple burl caps from a guy off of craigslist. It was all his grandfathers stock who passed away. Pretty much a shed full of really old wood but the problem was the younger guy didnt know much about it and I am not the most experienced myself. Most of the wood wasnt the best, alot of it was checked or cracked in various spots but for knife handle making there is alot thats usable. Want to go back up and get some more but its about 3 hours away. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Patrick, I agree with ya it will most definitely require stabilizing.

Yup the bark looks like madrone but the wood seems a bit light. However if the bark is red or deep red/brown more than likely madrone. Also it is very unstable and will check like mad so (as suggested) stabilizing is highly recommended.
