Hello! I am brand new to this forum and, forgive me, completely ignorant about Randall knives. I was given this knife by my father. He knows it has a some value because of the name, but that's about all. What I know just kind of guessing with help from looking at the Randall.com page:

Blade about 5 inches
handle stacked leather
butt cap not aluminum, nickle?
leather sheath letters 'G.D.R.' printed on back but faded
bake-lite snap covers maybe?
white Washita oilstone

The blade is in terrific shape, razor sharp! the handle is a bit on the needy side, not sure how to recondition it. I'm going to try and upload a folder of pics. Hope it works out! If anyone can shed some light on it, I'd be gratetful. I'm not going to monkey with it, put it back in its sheath until I know what I should do to preserve it. Thanks ahead of time to all that help me with this! :) https://www.dropbox.com/s/434niqoly55zl5i/2014-12-21 17.17.05.jpg?dl=0

Model 7 Fisherman-hunter? 4 1/2" and 5" blades of 3/16" stock. 4 1/4"-5/8" leather handle. Brass hilt. Duralumin butt cap...circa 1945-46....Just an educated guess tho

Krex: I can only see one photo of just the knife. Are there others?
The butt cap is aluminum.
Smo: Good educated guess! IMO circa '45-'49. Note:
1. It has a peened butt. That puts it mid '45 to ~ '49.
2. The blade "looks" to be 4.5 inches based on the handle length. Bo only offered 4 and 4.5 inch blades on a Model 7 until '48 when a 5 inch became available and the 4 inch option was discontinued.
3. If I could see the sheath snaps I could possibly pin it down a bit further: The Randall logo Lucite brown button snap was first offered in mid '46.

Best,
