Hi all,

I'm new to the board as of today and was hoping to tap into your wealth of knowledge to assist me in identifying my knife and it's characteristics.

I'm not a collector by any means but I do appreciate a nice knife, both for utility and cosmetics. With that in mind, I went eBay shopping about 4-5 years ago for something a bit different for a hunting/skinning knife. Keep in mind i was on a budget at the time as well, so I was looking for something that wouldn't break the bank as well.

Ended up buying this nice little drop point from a seller in Portland, Or for a very reasonable price (about $60 if I remember correctly). Things I DO know about it are it has a full tang construction, one decorative bolster (?) in the handle as well as 2 other pins and the lanyard hole, finger grooved handle (fits my big mitt very well), file work along the back, and it's marked "Arbuckle - Tualatin, Or". Overall length is 8" and the blade is 3 1/2".

Can anyone shed some light as to the maker? Also, with a lack of markings aside from the maker, how can I determine (short of lab tests  ) the blade material?

The knife has served me incredibly well over the past 4 hunting seasons and still is holding a very nice edge for having dressed and skinned about 6 mulies and 2 moose. Touch it up every now and then but nothing major. As happy as I am with the knife, I'd like to know a bit more about it - ie: more about the maker and his reputation/previous and subsequent work.

I appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

Regards,
ILBR :)

Ya might want to post this in the Bernard Levine forum for help identifying the maker, although someone form the Oregon Knife Collectors Assn. might know... You can check out their website, too.
Otherwise, if you've used it the way you say you have, I'd suspect it's either ATS-34 or 440C (maybe one of the CPM steels as it's only a few years old) as it appears to be stainless, w/Nickel Silver or Stainless Steel bolsters...
The workmanship does look familiar, as I may have seen his stuff at one of the OKCA shows in Eugene several years ago.
Check out Bernard's forum, and with these pics he'd be your best bet!
Good luck!

'Fatty' Arbuckle. I believe he is deceased. Rare work. I have never heard anything bad about him. Good score!

You are so friggin' WRONG, Coop! THAT Arbuckle did Virginia wrong, and was never the same since.;)

Yep, unless there was also a maker by the name of Fatty Arbuckle. The only person that I know of that went by that moniker was an comic actor from the 1920s that was wrongfully accused of manslaughter. He was eventually acquitted.

ROTFLMAO!!!! :D

You guys crack me!

I do believe the Arbuckle in question used to show at the Eugene show... His work and the name sure do sound familiar.. But hey, I think BSE has already taken hold up here in the Northwest!

I must be smokin' crack this afternoon... I dunno. The name just jumped out at me....

Oh, NOW I know. There was a 'Chubby' Hueske knifemaker. My bad.... :foot:

Don't let children play at the keyboard. :jerkit:   ;) :D

Well, wrongfully accused is a very specious term, at best. He was found not guilty. Let's just say that the details of what happened between Virginia Rappe and Fatty Arbuckle included some fairly unsavory acts, resulting in her death. Those facts were not disputed. His career was never the same after the trial.

There's a Jim Arbuckle on the forums who is a knife maker... However, he's in Virginia, IIRC... Has posted on the Maker's forums...

Hi I'm Jim Arbuckle and I'm a knife maker from Virginia. I haven't lived in Oregon in about 50 years, and this knife isn't one of mine. I did a quick check on dexonline.com and came up with two Arbuckles in Tualatin Oregon.
No relation as far as I know. I don't know if either of these gentlemen make knives, a phone call will tell.
Good luck Jim Arbuckle (the one from Virginia)
