I was wondering if anyone can give me any information on a samurai sword that I just picked up. Any info would be appreciated. Did some basic research and like I said I think that it is a Shin Gunto but thats about all I got out of it.

Thanks for your help.

This is a rather coarsely modern made rendition of a Japanese sword. The type that sells on Ebay for the price of shipping from China. I'd be curious to see a profile picture of the handle but only because the rest kind of speaks for itself. These are cheap and classifieds as fakes. An overall appearance at look ok from a distance but the closer you look, the worse ioit looks if looking at authentic swords.

A good place to start for Japanese swords are Richard Stein's great pages.

Thanks horseclover. I didnt know anything about it when I bought it. I figured that it looked old and must be old and figured it for a ww2 or something like that sword. Oh well. I should have known to stay away from something I knew nothing about.

How can I verify that it is definitely a fake.

Thanks,
Joe

The steel lets you know that it is absolutely fake. The japanese didn't make damascus steel.

I think its fake too. . Lets not mention the tsuba, tsuka etc... Many things about the blade itself is not right. the tip the material the mei. I hope you didnt pay too much for it.

I paid 60. What an idiot I am!

You got off cheaply. I spent nearly that much on my first "sword." A stainless steel "ninjato" complete with plastic handle, shoe string handle wrap and machined hamon.
