I made another thread a day or two ago regarding an axe I picked up, but the title really didn't imply I wanted/needed help. I have no clue as to the pattern, all I know is that my first suspicion of Hudson Bay is wrong, at least not a Council or Collins. The lovely person whom previously owned it before selling it to the antique mall I bought it from polished the stamp away (mostly), and I was wondering if there's any possible way to bring out or accent what may be left of the stamp to get a possible manufacturer. From what bit I can gather it may be two rows of lettering, the bottom starting with a possible C and ending with an N. I've rehanged it of an old double bit handle that I've reshaped, and used it quite a bit today. It holds an edge well, and chops great.

You might want to go to Yesteryears Tools and look through the Collins stamps. See if you can make out any of the following words:

Collins
Hartford
Conn.
Connecticut
Collinsville
Dymanicut
Commander

BTW, cool looking axe. I would call that a Hudson Bay pattern. Looks to be a little older than most you see.

And I can't really make out any words. I can get a definite CO on the bottom row, and an N at the end of it. That's about it. Trying to find ways to possibly bring out any possible remnants. Would vinegar work?

I've heard of people putting paper over it and making an impression with a pencil or hard crayon.

Tried that, and nothing really came out. Trying vinegar now. There's not a whole lot, so I'm hoping for some possible "fossilized" stamping showing up.

That's what I was thinking. Any idea on an approximate age? The Collins hudson bay's I saw didn't look anything like that.

I have an axe with almost the same "thick" HB pattern but it's clearly marked with the Wetterlings logo on the cheek. I don't know the age of it but yours is the only other one I've seen with a similar pattern.

That's what struck me odd at first. Most HB's I'd seen had been about 1.5-2 lbs, this one between three and four. I think it weighed in at about 3.5 on a bathroom scale.

Didn't get anywhere with the attempted vinegar raise. I don't want soak the whole head in vinegar yet, as I don't know the value.
