Help identifying Case fixed blade?

This was my fathers hunting knife. Probably at least pre 70s. If not post war. Bone handle. Overall length 10 1/4". Blade length 5 5/8". The guard and scale pins are brass. I can't find the sheath. It was brown leather as I recall.

Looks like a model 523-5, or 523-6

I believe the handles are stag

The 523-5 and 523-6 both have CASE XX USA markings. This knife does not have the "XX USA". Just CASE. I also can't find anything on the Shephard Hill site that matches these markings either.

Without any markings besides just the brand. How do you determine model number?
